It was the hard rock group Lordi from Finland. The guys that dress up like monsters and that don't want their real faces to bee shown on the media...

Crazy folks according to me, but they gave quite a show...

Why does the Eurovision Song contest still exist?

So Terry Wogan can get drunk and do his best to weaken our relationship with the rest of Europe

What was that german song from the Eurovision song contest that was just on the news about 5 mins ago?

In 1970 Germany's entry was "Wunder gibt es immer wieder", by Katja Epstein. The only winning German song was Nicole's "Ein bisschen Frieden" in 1982.

What do people really think of the uk entry for the eurovision song contest?

It seems that, because of the political situation in Europe, the UK has no chance of winning anyway, so what's the point of even being in the competition.

Historically, apart from some obvious exceptions, not many of the songs do well after the contest, even if they do win.

Perhaps we could have something more entertaining on TV - and let the others get on with it !

What do people really think of the uk entry for the eurovision song contest?
I like the song, and Andy seems like a nice guy.I would like to think the song stands a good chance, because it's catchy and I actually like it,but amongst some of the other acts...and props lol,I think Andy might get over shined but he did do really well and it was worth watching,I think it deserves to do well.
Reply:its an average pop song BUT I bet its a thousand times better than the rubbish that will actually win
Reply:love andy abrahams voice, not keen on the song.

We wont win anyway. I just watch it to laugh at terry wogan having his pop at the rest of europe for treating us like muppets.
Reply:its alright. its not like we'll get very far anyway... even if we had the best song of the lot, no one else likes us muchh :/ haha.
Reply:Really good singer- Bad song !!
Reply:we could have the best song in the competition but no one would vote for us.
Reply:i haven't heard it yet

Did you watch the eurovision song contest?

what did you think of the winners personally i was disgusted

Did you watch the eurovision song contest?
I was disgusted too. It was all good until they showed up, and then those ******* had to win.
Reply:i think nobody votes because they like a song-they vote with whatever they have in common with the country norway votes for sweden, greece votes for cyprus and so on as for the winners-i give them credit for being original-song wasn't that bad
Reply:no, i watched the prince's trust
Reply:I thought it was funny, the whole thing is a bad joke
Reply:I was at a Take That concert so missed eurovision for the 1st time in 20years!! i took a portable telly and got to see the end and the winners! all i can say is i doubt i would have voted for them.
Reply:Thought they looked awlful we never seem to get any points now it is all about polictics.

Which is best - Eurovision Song Contest or Eurovision Dance Contest?

As a long term viewer of the Song Contest (since Lausanne 1989), I have to agree with the general view that the quality of the songs have gone down over the years (coupled with the debate about political voting).

This Dance Contest is certainly an interesting idea and from seeing the dances so far performed (up to Denmark in the second round), it looks promising. The only question mark that will remain is "Is the voting still poltical?" (which considering that the Austrians could vote for the Germans is still a possibilty)

What do you think of the Eurovision Song contest?

Oh, not again. Im wondering if we get any more than 10 points this year. As there`s always a war on, everyone in europe hates us. Britain......0 points......Surprise surprise.

What do you think of the Eurovision Song contest?
I only watch the scoring part of it coz I like seeing the political point scoring lol.....I just can't sit thru the whole show anymore coz there are far too many countries involved in it which means it goes on for way too long.

In the 60's it was something we sat %26amp; watched together as a family but that was in the 60's not today.

I love seeing how many countries get the infamous nil points lol.
Reply:It is like the embarrassing auntie at the family party, you know the one that always gets too drunk, and no one has the heart to tell her off?

It is predictable, cringe worthy and comes around every year!
Reply:I only like it for Terry Wogan`s sarcasm and the fact that I don`t have to concentrate too hard,,,plus it`s a good opportunity to hurl abuse at foreigners,,
Reply:I love Eurovision!!!!
Reply:A waste of time, I used to love it when I was a kid but not now with all the political voting going on.
Reply:Its a political comedy and nothing else.
Reply:it is rubbish only because none of the singer are good and they see terrible songs what get stuck in your head
Reply:rubbish
Reply:i would get a violation message if i put what i thought
Reply:Worse than American Idol. Both are bullocks.
Reply:Even ABBA couldn't help the UK to win.
Reply:It's so shite that it's funny
Reply:I dont like that.
Reply:Fun, camp, cheesy!

I love it.
Reply:fun♥
Reply:its a joke

What do you think of the eurovision song contest at this stage ?

A load of crap!

What do you think of the eurovision song contest at this stage ?
Its all a fix, the UK wouldn't have done very well, if it weren't for Malta, because lets face it, governmentally, no one likes England, so we're never going to do well.
Reply:I don't really know why i bother watching. I practically know who is going to win because everyon votes for their neighbours! Notice how the western european countries are last! And that's why england and ireland never get any votes. I think the only reason england gets into the eurovision is because the other cuntries want to watch us be humiliated. We used to be good, and so did other countries, but now it's just a joke. But i do love making comments about the other countries. Terry wogan's comments are the only thing good about it nowadays!

By the way, notice how the western european countries are sort of last!
Reply:i now think that even if the uk had a fantastic song..we dont have a hope in hell anymore of winning...not whilst the voting is put to the public...too many eastern block countries voting for their neighbours..and they so out numbered us in this competition.. - we may as well throw in the towel!
Reply:it's finished
Reply:a joke!
Reply:Corny and boring are the two words that occur me. Only Eastern Europeans are still interested in that crap.
Reply:A load of rubbish...a complete fix...%26amp; glad it's over %26amp; done with !!!!
Reply:i still think it is rubbish,,
Reply:I liked it although I am kind of annoyed that out of 24 countries only 7 of them were eastern Europeans! And kind of all politically based. None of the votes are taken into account its all fixed!!!!!
Reply:It is RUBBISH

have a better night

at the karaoke for sure.
Reply:Same as i thought before......crap !!
Reply:crap
Reply:Over - thankfully
Reply:Way to political... which is daft as I'm sure in the EU they leaders brag to one another. It means nothing, and the people cant sing for bread.

Although Terry Wogan makes it much more entertainable.

Last note, although we were terrible, we were one of the best there.
Reply:I think its stupid all the countries vote for their neighbouring countries and not on which is the best song!!! I dont watch it any more. England loses every year anyway!

To the people who watched the Eurovision Song Contest who did you want to win and why?

who else thinks the UK was Rubbish?

Do you think the people who won shpould have won i dont think so cause they where rubbish?

To the people who watched the Eurovision Song Contest who did you want to win and why?
Hungary..for the blues song..great voice from the singer..honest music

Bulgaria..for the way they mixed up traditional with rave..again the singer had a great voice and presence

and Israel who didn't make the finals with their "Push The Button"..classic buffoonery...a lot of Kate Bush fans out there singing...but all mostly pap..I admired the winners for their stance on sexuality and UK were downright shite.. "Bucks Fizz" on the champagne bottle..yeah right! Ya Gotta love that Crap...so Funny..should be called Eastern Eurovision Song Contest..Thank God for Terry Wogan,we say...
Reply:I really wanted Ukraine to win, the song was perfect! I liked France and Romania, too. I don't think the Serbian song was anything special, but oh well....

I'm not even going to comment on UK's performance...
Reply:UK..Scooch is the best band ever....flying the flag..awesome!!
Reply:the UK of course. one of their singers comes from my city of Leeds!!!
Reply:Was there a full moon?, there was a lot of madness was at that song contest. Some very poor singing and the choreography was like a flea on crack. And of course the voting, with a system like that even Gordon Brown could win . :)
Reply:ukraine-coz they was ace

sweden cos they were ace and cute lol

i agree uk was crap...the song was based on sex jokes...like something to suck on while u land

What do u think of the entry that won the eurovision song contest?

Weird! The ESC will never be the same again! LOL

What do u think of the entry that won the eurovision song contest?
was ok but for comedy value i liked lithuania "we ar the winners" also liked the german country and western song very catchy
Reply:no opinion
Reply:total and utter rubbish ,but hey that's the euro vision song contest for you.it will probably be a big European hit but not in GB i don't think .and the voting is ssooo rigged we haven't go a hope in hells chance of actual good music winning have we.
Reply:thought it was wicked! couldnt believe it when they won! but to be honest i thought it was fixed! still thought they were good though
Reply:i thought it was funny as f**k, but it didnt deserve to win. U.K. should'a won!! but we weren't funny like them, an its all political anyway and stuff......
Reply:Was quite shocked but they obviously did it to stand out from the crowd and not be the usual "pop" act that is the standard - well, it certainly worked!

The winner of eurovision song contest have stoled the music from an albanian song?

I don't know where the Albanian roots have come from in this question. The winner came from Serbia (independent state territory) and the song was called "Molitva (Prayer)".

I honestly can't provide a reason to you that proves that the song's music had been in any way stolen from Albania.

Also, I am reeling still from the 23rd out of 24th position in the 2007 eurovision finals due to as Terry Wogan put it "block voting". Malta gave the UK their only 12 points. That was that.

The winner of eurovision song contest have stoled the music from an albanian song?
Do you Albanians really think that we wish to sing your songs?

Hahaha,nice!!!

Leave us!!!
Reply:(LOL )Albanian music?

Good answer, Red X. When will you albanians here on YA finally leave us alone? We are in the center of your world. Amazing.
Reply:who told you that?

it's really insane....

if marija stole it, she couldn't even sing it in front of serbia.

all of the songs are sang for the first time:O)

albanians....my god....you really ARE jealous
Reply:I dont really know since i dont watch eurovision but i am albanian and this jerk above me must be a serb so u shouldnt really read what he has to say cuz hes wrong, albos have amazing music!
Reply:no way...the albanian song,and generally,albanian music,sucks...sorry dude,albania is probably one of the worst countries EVER...in all aspects...
Reply:hahaha, did u hear that Albanian song?who said that? That song really sucks, you must be very idiot to believe that molitva is stolen from that crap.lol, the failure in the semifinal really caused you serious problems..go and see a doctor

Is it true that the U.K pay for the Eurovision song contest out of our TV licence fee?

yes the BBC is one of the founder members of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) and a major contributor to its funds.

This allows the BBC access to all the Members Television Facilities and services so enabling the BBC to be an European Leader in News, Sport, Weather and Occasions.

Hence why we don't have to compete in the Semi finals and get automatic entry to the finals. Same as France, Germany and Ireland.

Is it true that the U.K pay for the Eurovision song contest out of our TV licence fee?
First I've heard of it. I would think there would be comment about it in the press if they did.
Reply:We certainly pay for a host of TV presenters and their researchers, aids, secretaries etc etc to go on a luxury junket every year. Of course I'm not bitter lol

Wasn't there something in the news about Eire winning two years running and desperate not to win a third year because they couldn't afford it?
Reply:Don't know but it's criminal if they do!
Reply:Not sure about that, but apparently we are a major contributor towards the cost of organising the event.

Why does Israel have a song in the Eurovision Song Contest?

Last time I checked Israel was in the Middle East not Europe?

Why does Israel have a song in the Eurovision Song Contest?
If you find out , let me also know. It is not only Eurovision but other European competitions as well, such as Football , Basketball etc. It's not that I have something against Israel , but it is odd, isn't it?
Reply:For the same reason Turkey is in the EU,. MONEY, exploitation, cheap labour, the advance of the "Federation of Europe", the Islamification and multiculturalisation of the West, a supposed "pro- semitic" solution to what is happening in the Middle East? Who knows? The whole thing has become a political farce, a device to score political points over other nations, how low can we go? Not we the electorate in our countries, but our supposed rulers who engage in this corrupt fest? Time it was put to sleep and real issues dealt with, there really are more important issues at stake here. Nil points to all. They/we need to get a life. Whilst half the world is watching this c**p, the other half are eating it!
Reply:Think they're part of some European TV group.

Turkey isn't in the EU Willow. Not all of Europe is in the EU.
Reply:amm good one. i think in sports, arab states national teams didnt show up against us. so we were doing our world cup qualifiers in australia for a while.. i guess europe is closer..
Reply:i think cos its in the european broadcasting union or something?
Reply:one day it 'll be no where!!!

Who really deserved to win last night Eurovision Song Contest?
I didn't mind Finland winning. It was different for a Eurovision entry. I thought the Swedish entry was best though. I thought the UK song was well performed but I don't like rap at all. The good thing is that all countries got points. I still think that it is a great shame that nieghbouring countries vote for each other rather than on the merits of the songs.
Reply:i think this answer deserves 4 stars. i wish i could change my rating... sorry Report Abuse

Reply:Finland, duh! Did you see it?, they had axes and fireworks and demon masks!

Fantasy metal FTW!
Reply:Nobody did.
Reply:My fav were Russia, Armenia, Macedonia, Denmark and Spain
Reply:let finland have it's glory geeez it's just a contest, not an election for the next PM
Reply:Bosnia.

Their song was Layla (lejla). It was beautiful. Their performance was very good. Dresses were good and modest. They didn't try to be sexy or do weird things on the stage. Their music was "their". Not american or nor something else.. Music from Bosnia.

They did their music -not a stage show- and their music was beautiful.
Reply:Finland won They were rubbish.

The costumes were good they were dressed as War Lords
Reply:Armenia!
Reply:I am from Malta and we came last and i dont think we deserved that. I think Greece was the best song though.

Come primo was not a eurovision song contest entry?

Not if it was sung by Mario Lanza. He died in 1959 and none of the Eurovision contests 1956 - 1959 had Come Prima as an entry. It was probably sung during the film "For the First Time" (known as Come Prima in Italy) which was released in 1959 and starred Mario as Tonio Costa.

If you check the website below it has all the years since 1956 on a drop down menu and has all the entries for each contest.

Does anyone really watch the Eurovision Song Contest?

Who gives a SH*T, they're all crap, and what happens to the bands that win, are they ever heard of afterwards???

Except for Bucks Fizz in the 80's who had a succession on number 1 hits of course.

Does anyone really watch the Eurovision Song Contest?
I'll put my hand up, I've been watching it every year since i was 8 (35 now) and loves the cheesiness of it all, great costumes, naff singing, Terry's voice overs getting more and more funny as he drinks more whiskey, and the fact that all the countries vote for their neighbours and no one votes for us! even turn down nights out when it's on. maybe that's why I'm still single?
Reply:It's the best comedy show on TV at the present time Lordi who won it last year looked like something off Dr Who.
Reply:Yes, I usually have a Eurovision Party where lots of people come to my house, we all watch it whilst drinking a lot and coincidentally it gets pregressively funnier as the evening wears on and the beer fridge gets emptier. I usually make up score sheets for people to fill in and we do a sweepstake on who will win.
Reply:It was brilliant when everyone sang in their native language. Several beers and teletext subtitles made for a hilarious night.

Unfortunately now it's all in in English and quite boring, though Lordi livened up the proceedings last year!!

And of course Abba were superb
Reply:Terry Wogan watches it, but then he does get about a million quid for the pleasure.
Reply:@K B - that sounds fun.

I rarely watch it so to answer your question, not me. Britain is SO going to win (sarcastic)
Reply:most of them sound the same.
Reply:i hate that dog do do!
Reply:Actually - yes I do watch them! And I was absolutely kicking myself for not putting on a bet that Finland would win last year! It's actually quite funny - if only to hear Mr Wogan make wonderfully sarcastic remarks about the performances!

It's all just a bit of fun!
Reply:I hope they dont. And shame on anyone who admits to watching that load of shite
Reply:i do!
Reply:I watch the end, just to see whose won
Reply:we watch every year it is very funny especially some out fits make us lough
Reply:It is absolute squit yeah. However I watch it because all the European nations apart from Britain take it VERY seriously.

and its very funny to watch them make absolute a*ses of themselves thinking what they are perfoming is actually good music.
Reply:no that terry wogan pi$$es me off with his crap

anyway it's all fixed, total load of $.hit if you ask me.
Reply:i did watch it last year and i did like the winners lordi and now have 2 of there albums

Why is Israel in the Eurovision song contest ---they are not in Europe ?

Although not in Europe, Israel is allowed to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest as a member of the EBU and did so for the first time in 1973.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU; French: L'Union Européenne de Radio-Télévision ("UER"), and unrelated to the European Union) was formed on 12 February 1950 by 23 broadcasting organisations from Europe and the Mediterranean at a conference in the coastal resort of Torquay in Devon, England. In 1993, the International Radio and Television Organisation (OIRT), an equivalent organisation of broadcasters from Central and Eastern Europe, was merged with the EBU.

As of July 6, 2007, the EBU has 75 active members from 56 countries, and 43 associate members from a further 25. Members are radio and television companies, most of which are government-owned public service broadcasters or privately owned stations with public missions. Full active Members are based in countries from Algeria to the Vatican State, including almost all European countries. Associate members aren't limited to those from European countries and the Mediterranean but include broadcasters from Canada, Japan, Mexico, India and Hong Kong, as well as many others. Associate Members from the United States include ABC, CBS, NBC, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and Time Warner.

Active members are those whose states fall within the European Broadcasting Area, or otherwise those who are members of the Council of Europe.

The EBU's highest profile production is the Eurovision Song Contest organised by its Eurovision Network. The ability of any country from which there are full members of the EBU to enter this contest leads both to the ever growing number of entries, and the counter-intuitive inclusion of countries, such as Morocco and Israel, which aren't geographically or politically part of Europe. The Eurovision Network also organises the Eurovision Young Dancers competition, the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, and other competitions for young musicians and screenwriters, which are modelled along similar lines. The countries in the EBU have also often worked together to create documentaries and (animated) children's programming. The first such co-production was the animated series The Animals of Farthing Wood from 1993 based on the books of the same title by Colin Dann. The second animated collaboration was Noah's Island from 1997 and more recently, Pitt and Kantrop. Another important EBU program is Jeux sans frontières.

Also, most EBU broadcasters have a group deal to carry the Olympics and FIFA World Cup (particularly, the games of their country and the Final).

Another annually recurring event is broadcast across Europe through the EBU is the Vienna New Year's Concert.

Why is Israel in the Eurovision song contest ---they are not in Europe ?
Although not in Europe, Israel is allowed to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest because it's a member of the European Broadcasting Union - EBU. (And re the previous answer, a tiny part of Turkey IS geographically in Europe).
Reply:to the person above the person above^^

part of turkey is in europe and the other part is in asia
Reply:Turkey isn't either and nevertheless participates.
Reply:Neither is France. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking.

nobody will ever vote for the u.k they might as well just not enter and save themselves the humiliation
Reply:no the should re name it the most boring competition in the world,,
Reply:Are you kidding? I was very surprised Serbia won!

I was really expecting one of the 'pop' numbers, or the hard rock types to win (again) this year (I loved Lordi, last year).

The Serbian entry was a beautiful, poignant ballad, quite unusual for Eurovision, imo.

Hmmm, maybe it's apparent I liked the result, lol!

I think Eurovision should be HAPPY and this years Turkish song doesnt sound very HAPPY.

I havent heard all the entrys yet but i like Greece/Germany and United Kingdom but I dont think any stand out as winners yet.Time will tell!!!

Reply:i think they could make a much better song when we think they have such tremendous songs. they must have made the song rather hard rock; because it is the recent tendency for a good choice of the eurovision voters.

and my two favourites;

Greece; Kalomoira - My Secret Combination (if they hardly work on the dance performance; they will be the first for sure)

And maybe, Andorra Gisela - Casanova...
Reply:I watch this contest since i was born and i assure you, with some 1 or 2 exceptions of really good songs, the others won for political reasons!

The best ex: in 1987 eurovision song contest, Italy presented one of the best songs ever!

It didn't won... do i need to say more?
Reply:I like it. It's much better than the past Eurovision songs (from any country) that has been over-the-top cheesy and lame. It's easy to tell that this is a TRUE song and that the singer can actually sing. So like I said, I'm glad that this song and band were chosen this year.

Now THIS is the worst song:

Reply:this is certainly not the best work of Mor ve Otesi but still way beyond Sertab`s and Kenan Dogulu`s crappy songs. I don`t care whether it turns out to be the winner or not, this is the best Turkish eurovision song I have ever listened.
Reply:I like it a lot, despite I can't understand the lyrics, obviously. It is far better than "Baila el Chiki Chiki" by Rodolfo Chikilikuatre, from Spain, a complete joke!! haha

4! EL ROBOCOP!

12 points to Turkey from Greece :)
Reply:This song too good for a contest like eurovision. The key is to pretend either you're a Balkan or Scandinavian country, then all your neighbors give 12 points.

Zdravo! Goddag! Now my 12 points please!
Reply:Yeah, I liked it too. At least, it is a rock song ;-)

I haven't listened other songs yet.

Are You Going To Watch The Eurovision Song Contest Tonight?

Or has it gone too far?

Have A Nice Day:)

Are You Going To Watch The Eurovision Song Contest Tonight?
Yeah of course, with a bottle of wine. Its the national pi** take of the year, why would anyone wanna miss it?! And I love watching my country being hated on by all the other countries %26amp; the fact that we practically fund the whole thing, i.e. if we wern't in it the damn thing wouldn't even exist cuz they wouldn't be able to afford to run it, just makes it even more ironic that no-one ever votes for us, dont you think?

In my opinion we should say f**k ya then, if you aint gunna vote for us, we aint gunna give you our money.

Its all to do with politics %26amp; all the neighbouring countries vote for each other. We dont have any neighbours %26amp; no-one likes our political choices, so thst explains a lot. However they're more than happy to come %26amp; live here, take our jobs, scrounge off our social %26amp; generally put a strain on our economy.

Sorry! Such a simple question has made me go off on 1! But as you can tell I feel quite strongly about it!! =)

[EDIT] It is now the day after Eurovision %26amp; we came last, despite Andy Abraham giving a real good performance.

POINT PROVEN =)
Reply:It has gone to far, waaaaaaaay too far. But I'm still going to get a nice bottle of wine and sit down and watch it.

I watch it for Terry Wogans comments. He is a funny, funny man.

Gonna go for Greece

England havent a chance as usual lol ( and i am english )

But would laugh if Finland (Lordi) or Lithuania actually won but to be honest its all become too political when the voting comes into account

What do you think of lordi winning the eurovision song contest?
they used the word "Arockalypse" in the lyrics of the song and for that alone they deserved to win.
Reply:Given that half-baked heavy metal is so enormously popular across most of mainland Europe I think it's amazing no-one's thought of putting up a half baked HM song before.... I wish I'd managed to get to the bookies during the day to put ten quid on it - it was sure to win.... even despite the Balkan/Baltic/Hellenic stitch up....
Reply:Lordi put on a quality performance and the size of their victory shows they were popular across Europe, not just with their neighbours. I voted for Lithuania, nothing to do with me getting them in the sweep...

What will come first. The UK winning the Eurovision Song Contest , Peace in Iraq or Aliens landing on earth?

Saying none of them will ever happen is not an option.

What will come first. The UK winning the Eurovision Song Contest , Peace in Iraq or Aliens landing on earth?

Eurovision song contest. What a joke!?

Perhaps next year we should have two contests, one for the Eastern European countries and one for the Western European countries.

Or maybe the United Kingdom should just pull the funding and see how they cope without us.

And with all that political voting going on, why the heck didn't we give any votes to Ireland?!!!

Thank you

Eurovision song contest. What a joke!?
CALM DOWN, CALM DOWN

It’s only a game.

Why do people think that If the UK doesn’t win, it’s all down to politics. What evidence do you have for this?

Has it not occurred to you that people in different parts of Europe have different musical tastes – so a Lithuanian is more likely to like something from Estonia than from Spain? Also, how often have you heard the UK entry? Probably, if you’re into Eurovision, you’ve heard it a lot. Now what songs do you think the people in Bosnia have heard on their radios? The Serbian one? The Croatian one? Very likely. So they vote for songs that are familiar. After all, if it was political the Serbs would do very badly in the former Yugoslavia.

Anyway, the UK song was terrible. How many more times are the UK going to enter Bucks Fizz clones?
Reply:wow all that music was so good. it has truly inspired me. also the fat girl from serbia was beautiful i want to marry her
Reply:Great idea about the two contests - I don't know why we bother to even enter.
Reply:I think its played itself out. Its not about a good song anymore, its politics now..
Reply:That's the whole point - it's a joke. That is why it is so amusing to watch.

I can't believe anybody takes it seriously.
Reply:A rather good joke, I think. It's supposed to be funny.
Reply:Serbia eh ,Ok without checkin is there anyone who can remember the name of the group ?

Can't see them selling out stadia around the world ,can you?

Oh and we should have given all our points to Ireland
Reply:since europe expanded into the world ha ha we have no chance of winning this song contest all we need is america on our side when do europe take over the yanks
Reply:i feel we should be relegated, russia should have won it was the best song. i feel we should leave the ebu its politics not the best song. we pay so much get nothing out of it let the eastern european countries pay for it. t
Reply:i'm sick of the political neighbour country voting. Scooch was hardly cutting edge, but jesus, some of that sh*t turned out tonight and we only get 2 votes, one from ireland and one from malta......
Reply:Lets face it. Countries like Ukraine, Russia Serbia, Latvia etc could simply walk on stage and fart repeatedly into the microphone and they'd still receive top marks from their neighbouring countries, it's a joke now.
Reply:if you are annoyed about the program dont watch it simple
Reply:I completly agree, I feel sorry for Ireland now. They did us a big favour and yet, we put salt in their eyes! Aww.

It was a fix, a lot of countries knew who they were voting for even before the performances x !

I don't think England actually wanted to win, there was no hope with Scooch anyway.

Next year if England want to win, we have to put somebody good forward. Like Jordan and Peter singing A Whole New World in glitter, maybe that will give us votes? Or Chico with the kids, singing Its Chico Time. That would win it!
Reply:When the eurovision song contest was primarily made up of western European countries Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Iceland all voted for each other, as did other close groups (including England and Ireland) and we STILL did badly! Mostly because our entries are so bad. Would any of us REALLY pay to see Scooch?
Reply:the Ireland point....exactly. I asked the same question 10 mins ago. We have just lost our only alli in Europeean song contest! What a waste of money
Reply:I totally agree with u. eurovision song contest? Ha! more like political contest to me.

I only watched it because of Terry. He makes me laugh with all those witty comments. United Kingdom should have been in the top 5. It was better than most others.
Reply:Eastern European nonsense!. We deserved so much more!.
Reply:I don't know why I bother answering this, as you will not listen to me and I will get thumbs down, but I'll just try.

Eurovision is not political - 1. people will not vote for something they don't like and 2. if e.g Ukraine votes for Russia, it's not because they are neighbours, but because their music is closer to them and so is the language. If the show was political, the winner would be the same every year and it would be the country who has most neighbours. The fact that UK didn't give points to Ireland proves this.

I'm from continental Europe myself and my country, Slovakia, never takes part in this contest, so my opinion would be the most unbiased one. What you guys don't seem to realize is that people on the continent have different taste in music. But you choose to think it's political, because Terry Wogan says so and because you don't share a border with any country, instead of admitting your acts are simply not good.

And don't you think that if every country gives points to 10 countries, it actually prevents the contest from being political?
Reply:I agree compleately lets face it all the songs are crap and the uk and ire were watching the grease singing thing instead like my missis was therefore not bothering to vote

( politically ) for each other.
Reply:We had No chance of winning same as Germany, France, Ireland and Spain after seeing how many Eastern Countries where in the running. Armenia and Gerorgia! Not Part of Europe by a long shot, they are in the Near East!!!

Eurovision Song Contest,do you think the contest is a farce because of countries voting for fellow countries?

It's not always because of bloc voting, but it is also because of poor music that the countries send there year after year (especially the big 4)!!! The quality has escaped from ESC lightyears ago and it is nothing but sheer stage circus these days!!! Nothing to do with music any more!!

Eurovision Song Contest,do you think the contest is a farce because of countries voting for fellow countries?
Of course it's a farce! And it has especially become so since the Eastern-Bloc countries came into the contest. They seem to have no concept of 'fair-play' or 'sportsmanship'. For them the ESC has become a poltical battlefield where they vote along purely partisan and political lines. Before they even hear the entries of the Western European nations they already know how they are going to vote, i.e. neighbouring countries and, of course, Mother Russia, the Great Protectress, who must be appeased lest she decide to lean on the offending East European nation which failed to give her top or near- top marks.

Until the Western nations of Europe stop lavishly handing out points to the Eastern European nations and show more solidarity between them, they can wave goodbye to any hopes of ever again getting anywhere in the ESC, as Eastern Europe, the Ukraine and Russia have clearly shown the path they have chosen to go down, and that is to restrict all significant points awarded to their fellow former Eastern-Bloc countries. With that system solidly in place, no Western European nation can ever again hope to win the ESC, and they might as well stay home!

The ESC has been cynically turned into a political and partisan arena by the countries of Eastern Europe (and former Soviet satellites) which cannot conceive of awarding points on the purely artistic merits of a song. It is obviously a concept deeply alien to them and as a consequence they have all but killed off the ESC in terms of being a musical competition ostensibly based on talent and musical merit and has become a 'flatter my neighbour' exercise.

It would seem that the only way to counter nepotism and favouritism would be to assign a number to each of the competing countries, make them choose between English and Esperanto for their lyrics, and keep their identities a secret, so that people would then in effect be voting purely on the basis of the artistic and musical merit of an entry, but alas I doubt whether this impartial system would be either feasible or acceptable.
Reply:yes we could send the best singer in the world to represent great britain and we still wouldn't win-because we're not in eastern europe
Reply:YES absolutely a farce !!
Reply:Pure boll-ocks. If it was a serious contest the UK would win every time. Not some La la la dee doo da la do da day

Oh NO! Is it 'The Eurovision Song Contest' time again?

As a child, my family and I used to look forward to the contest - we invited friends round and made it a fun evening ...all of us keeping our own scores.

Over the past 10 years or so, since the eastern blocks have started entering, it seems to have transformed from a music contest into a political rabble.

As judges appear to base points on their political relationships, it seems pointless to recognise the the event as a fair contest.

Even if the scores ARE based on the artists talent, they still show no validation because more than often, some countries share similar tastes in music or have similar languages. Also, some artists who are popular in some countries are unknown to others.

Isn't it time the organisers started to rethink and make some changes by somehow grouping the contesting countries?

Oh NO! Is it 'The Eurovision Song Contest' time again?
I dunno... part of me, a very small and niggly part (oo-er!) thinks they should just pack the whole thing in... as you say, it is all about political hugging and posturing for a day out next year rather than a musical competition... but then I don't think it has ever actually been a musical competition.

That said though, I think it is an opportunity for some of the other european nations to give exposure to their music industry (which we don't really need), though if the "stuff" we see and hear is indicative, then maybe they shouldn't bother?!

Just seen a quick run through of some of the past particiants on the TV, and frankly it is a competition for people that don't like music. I will happily support anyone that wants to be creative in a musical sense but if they think the rubbish that is presented is actually any good, then they should think again.
Reply:i know, i'm going to be missing Doctor Who because of this tripe!!! to be honest the whole thing has always been political, which is why the UK always do badly, bacause we are not a fully fledged EU state and hav'nt joined the Euro. put it this way as a musician there is no way that the point system is based on talent, because there is none!!!, i think to be honest the whol joke should be axed. but maybe im a tad too cynical...
Reply:Even Terry Wogan makes jokes about it, but how can you argue against a contest that will be watched by 600 million people worldwide?

Watching it is not COMPULSORY.

The last time I watched it was in 1964, when Matt Monro came second, it was more fun to watch in those days.

Reply:I think that maybe a bit political and all that but it shows us musical talent which we would not normally see. I think this years entry is pretty good. I will be watching probably the most exciting contest ever. I will be willing Britain on knowing we will not win.
Reply:As long as people keep watching it they'll keep showing it......................Vote with your remote!!
Reply:That's true. These days its just a laugh and not what it used to be. Still watch it though.
Reply:How Boring, I'll be turning it off! ...lol

In the Eurovision song contest do countries vote for their neighbours because of politics or similar taste?

Yes. Countries vote for their neighbors because of politics or similar taste.

The contest is supposed to be devoid of any political meaning, and just a celebration of world unity through music. But you and I both know that when dealing with countries, you can't leave politics out of it. So unfortunately, many of the votes are influenced by politics, even though they shouldn't be.

In the Eurovision song contest do countries vote for their neighbours because of politics or similar taste?
similar taste
Reply:they always vote for their neighbours, never really go by the best performance, thats why the winners usually suck and the ones with real talent miss out. ; )
Reply:politics.
Reply:political..
Reply:Obviously when countries have split into more countries, they have increased their voting potential, because they will appreciate the type of music from that area. Because a country splitting up is political that element is due to politics.

The voting is all done by the people of the countries now, so politics will come into it, if the UK want to improve their chances then taking the troops out of Iraq might help a bit, but it is a song contest between some very different countries, and the taste of the voters will make the biggest impact on the votes given.

Most voters will only have seen the songs from other countries once, the performances have to impress them on one showing. With different languages, different traditions and different views on the world, it is hard to impress all the voters.

This year I liked Sweden, and Russian entries the best, that wasn't a political view, but they performed in English, and I could understand them.

I voted for Sweden.

A bit of politics, and a lot of personal taste.
Reply:political for sure
Reply:politics!

if it is because of similar taste then most of europe have really bad taste in music. although that is a fair point, because european music is pretty shite!
Reply:It died being a SONG contest a few years ago...it is now scratchy back time, including politics...

Was a time when the winning entry was catchy enough to leave you humming along the following day, now the tune has gone from your mind when you switch the TV off - if not before!
Reply:not exactly politic voting - it's just human nature to like your nearby countries more than countries you don't know i think... like us and Ireland...oops we didn't vote for them !

Which is your favourite song of eurovision song contest this year?

I liked Carola Häggqvists sone Invincible - because I'm Swedish.

I liked Lordis Hard Rock Halleluja - because I live in Finland.

But I also liked the song called Why do the angels cry (I can't remember the country, was it Cyprus?) and Belgiums Je t'adore by Kate Ryan (she didn't make it to the final on Saturday).

Which is your favourite song of eurovision song contest this year?
France's song was beautiful, but that ex-hairdresser sang awfully..... such a pity

Is it true Hitler stopped Lulu's Boom-Bang-a-Bang winning the Eurovision Song Contest?

Yes it's true, after inventing the time machine in 1943 Adolf spent an amazing amount of time changing the face of popular music as we know it, especially the eurovision. It was Hitler's idea to have Sandie Shaw perform shoeless and for Buck Fizz to lose their skirts mid song but his biggest coup was keeping a young Lulu from winning the competition, thankful his plans to scupper Brotherhood of Man backfired.

Is it true Hitler stopped Lulu's Boom-Bang-a-Bang winning the Eurovision Song Contest?
I think if you should ever meet Lulu, you'd better do a runner. She's not THAT old. I think the song probably didn't win because there was a better song, but I believe you are thinking of Cliff Richard's song which is rumoured to have been stopped from winning by Franco's fascist party.
Reply:1) Hitler committed suicide in 1945

2) The first Eurovision Song Contest was held in Lugano, Switzerland, on 24 May 1956.

3) Lulu represented the United Kingdom by performing the song "Boom Bang-a-Bang" in March, 1969
Reply:Lulu is 50yrs old Hitler committed suicide in 1945.

Simple mathematics prove you are of the mark.

But am i missing something in your question ?.

Is it time we (UK) washed our hands of the Eurovision song contest?

We should just not vote next year, Not a single vote would be very funny!!! Why should we when nobody votes for us!! We should start a campaigne!!!

Is it time we (UK) washed our hands of the Eurovision song contest?
Yes it is time we dropped out of the Eurovision song contest, all the Eastern European countries vote for their own part of the world. Scandinavian countries vote the same way for their own people, Spain and France just stick together as well. To me its a waste of time for any British singer/song writers to even attempt to find a song for Europe, they are not going to win! If we are paying to be in this song contest then lets get out and then the money we pay for the tv licence can be spent on better programmes on the BBC. At the moment I feel the money for my licence is being spent on repeats and more repeats.
Reply:Probably.

But I've heard that the UK are one of the counrties that pay for it, so I guess if we drop out then they are gonna have some funding problems. Also, all the other countries are gonna brand us as sore losers, and I'm sure that would annoy alot of people.

Its all about politics, a bill would probably have to be taken up by the EU and passed, or something ridiculous like that...
Reply:yes, like terry wogan said its become too political, personally i dont see the point of the whole contest, since countries cant vote for themselves countries tend to vote for their neighbours and shunt those that they generally dont like. It aint fair for all involved.

When if ever did Britain win the eurovision song contest and with what song?

Five times:

1967 - Puppet On A String, Sandie Shaw

1969 - Boom Bang A Bang, Lulu

1976 - Save Your Kisses For Me, Brotherhood Of Man

1981 - Making Your Mind Up, Bucks Fizz

1997 - Love Shine A Light, Katrina %26amp; The Waves

When if ever did Britain win the eurovision song contest and with what song?
The last time UK won the Eurovision Song Contest was 10 years ago (1997) and had highest points ever awarded to a winning country / song. The song was "Love Shine A Light" by Katrina and The Waves, written by Kimberly Rue. The venue, The Point in Dublin and was co-hosted by Ronan Keating from Boyzone. He performed a fantastic song that showed the band had also turned that corner from boyband to manband!

God, I have some memory... huh!

Apologies for the digression but I hope this answers your question.
Reply:1967 - Sandie Shaw ('Puppet On A String'). Reached No.1 in the U.K. charts.

1969 - Lulu ('Boom-Bang-A-Bang'. Joint 1st place with France, The Netherlands and Spain). Reached No.2 in the U.K. charts.

1976 - Brotherhood of Man ('Save Your Kisses For Me'). Reached No.1 in the U.K. charts.

1981 - Buck's Fizz ('Making Your Mind Up'). Reached No.1 in the U.K. charts.

1997 - Katrina %26amp; The Waves ('Love Shine A Light'). Reached No.3 in the U.K. charts.

The best Cliff Richard ever managed was 2nd place in 1968, with 'Congratulations'.

Has America got more chance of winning the Eurovision Song Contest?

Than the UK.

Has America got more chance of winning the Eurovision Song Contest?
No America are not a part of the EU. However if an American were to produce and write a song that would work
Reply:No, Don't think so. I watched Britain got talent and there was a lot of good acts, I watched a bit of Americas got talent and they were so bad it was funny....

UK Always do crap in the Eurovision.
Reply:No because America would not be eligible to enter as they are not in the E U.
Reply:No, they'll be even more unpopular than the UK and Germany lol
Reply:Little green men in flying saucers have more chance than the uk.

Is it just the UK that can't vote for its own country?cause like we always suck...lol

I totally loved Dima Bilan, great job Russia bringing out eye candy..lol

%26amp; Pirates of the sea(Latvia),great song too.

Eurovision song contest 2008?
yea both dima's and the pirate's songs were GREAT!

don't worry we always suck also!! hehe from Malta!!
Reply:Uhh....UK suck cause you never have good songs (sorry).

Have you noticed that UK, Germany, Spain and France usually don't have a very good success in Eurovision?

The reason is probably because Europe think it's unfair that you get in the finals without have to go through the semifinal, even though those countries pay most so the competition can be possible, still it's unfair you just get into the finals. So why voting when it doesn't matter?

Anyway, no, countries can not vote for their own.
Reply:Oh yea Spain rocked the house !!

EL CHIKICUATRE FOREVER!

*This question is in Lesbian Gay and Transgendered because Eurovision is gay !

Additional details-

naa im kidding Spain sucks but that's because they dont even have to pass through semifinals. I like Armenia and Ukraine. Im quite glad that Armenia did good, I think it proves that its not ALL about politics.
Reply:I've not watched that for years. It went downhill a long time ago, and there's too much political voting. That might explain why the winners aren't always the best entrants.

I'm old enough to remember Bucks Fizz winning, now that was a catchy tune.
Reply:I cannot BELIVE that Russia won! It was total crap!

Denmark was my favorite.

All the voting is totally biased thats why the UK never gets any points. Otherwise we would do well.
Reply:Na, i liked Ishtar beter but we didn't get trough the semi-finales.

Since the east-block joined Eurosong isn't the same anymore!
Reply:I have to admit our entry was pretty bad [england]

I think latvia should of won :)

Wee need some trash like what every one has :P

Eurovision Song Contest: Should they go back to the old jury decision instead of public voting?

I don't like public voting, because the people in other nations don't seem to appreciate British talent, and we end up as losers every time.

Should they use the good old jury again, who can really judge about a good song, rather than that stupid majority vote??

Eurovision Song Contest: Should they go back to the old jury decision instead of public voting?
i totally agree. I think that it's unfair that the eastern europeans are voting for each other but I don't think a panel of judges will make much difference. They won't nescesarily vote for the best, And they would be exposed to a lot of bribes and threats from other countires. If a judge gave a neighbouring country "0" then they would have problems with passports security etc. so what I think we should do is Put restrictions on voting so as to stop all formerly occupied countries vote for the russians and the eastern ones voting for themselves.
Reply:The change of the voting system/introducing judge panels will NEVER change anything, it's just about sending in world-class artists and not all those unknown acts! It's as simple as that, because world-class music is currently completely outside the ESC!!!
Reply:of course!any idiot with money can win just with anyone with money:P

Of course I do. But I´m just testing that does other people, specially out from Europe know what this is? I think its quit remarkable event .

Do you know what is eurovision song contest?
People in Europe think it is actually a real song contest. We in Britain think it is fabulously stupid but we still watch it.
Reply:The single most retarded thing ever? It's not even Europe... freaking Israel, wtf? The music's hella bad too, unless you count Lordi, lol! And ABBA. xD
Reply:I do not live in Europe, but I only know a little of it.

Only countries from the Europe Broadcasting Union are eligible to send in their song entries into the contest, and all the song entries must be original, sung by a singer from eac of their respective countries. Each year, the Big Four countries who pay the most to the EBU are automatically into the finals which are UK,Germany,France and Spain if I'm not wrong?

I like the event, but the political voting is bothering me from the Eastern Bloc.
Reply:A load of bollocks,those outwith europe avoid at all costs %26amp;

THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST IS GETTING A BULLSHIT!!------ONLY EUROPEANS ANSWER please....♥♥?

DOESN'T IT SUCK,THAT EASTERN COUNTRIES VOTE ONLY FOR THEIR NEIGHBOURS EVEN THOUGH THE SONG...IS A ****??!?!

LIKE TURKEY'S SONG..IT'S RUBBISH-------HERE ALMOST EVERYONE WAS SURPRISED THEY PASSED TO THE FINALS..

THEN GOOD SONGS LIKE

-MALTA'S SONG-VODKA

- Bulgaria-DJ, take me away

DIDN'T PASS TO THE FINALS.....

SHAME TO ALL THE COUNTRIES WHO VOTE FOR THEIR NEIGHBOURS!!

I REALLY HOPE THAT ANY COUNTRY FROM THE WEST WILL WIN THIS YEAR...BUT IT WILL BE DIFFICULT SINCE MOST COUNTRIES IN THE EAST ARE IN THE FINALS...

THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST IS GETTING A BULLSHIT!!------ONLY EUROPEANS ANSWER please....♥♥?
I think you're the biased one.

You use foul language in your question, trying to demean the whole thing.

Then you run down individual countries not to your personal liking.

Then more insults to all the other countries except yours of course.

Then you whine for not having any neighbours.

When I find something as repulsive as you just described this song contest - I don't waste my time watching it.

You can always opt out of it: call out for a referendum on your island and don't send any more representatives. Then when it's on next year, you simply change the channels and watch something else.

Otherwise, if you're in it, you're automatically accepting the rules. It's called free will participation. You're not missed now, and by next year you'll be forgotten.
Reply:Are you honestly under the slightest illusion this programme has EVER been anything but a political love in?

It used to be the case that Malta always gave Britain full points. Greece and Turkey always give each other full points.

All the eastern European countries are doing is continuing the same old irritating tradition. The best song won't win. And without being biased I reckon the best song is the British one.
Reply:Yup, its all polititcs, thats all its ever been.

The only reason countries win is out of sympathy that thie are going though hardship- which is not the right way of going about it as whoever wins has to foot the bill for hosting the next contest.

This year? likely to be the middle east again, and likely the UK will fail. We wont win unless we start our own civil war and require the sympathy vote.
Reply:I used to think that the whole thing was a bit of a laugh and the odd eccentricity in the voting was all part of the fun. Now I just think it is blatant nepotism and anti-western bigotry. I no longer watch it.
Reply:Votes always suck but here are mine so far

Reply:Have you been brainwashed by Wogan. Eurovision is a cultural exchange amongst european countries, and it is only natural to prefer the music of countries geographically closer to your own.

Why didn't Ireland make it this year?

I believe UK stands a really good chance this year, however Wogan does not do us any favours. His comments about other European countries, except the UK are so negative. Even the presenter of the semifinal on Thursday evening was not very nice in his comments. Rather than criticise these countries, we should be thankful that they are willing to engage in this cultural exchange. Some of them even participate by singing in English. A language foreign to them but not to us. And yet they want to share their thoughts and feelings with the rest of the continent and the world.

Just enjoy the show.
Reply:i think you are very wrong
