It's becoming a farce with eastern european countries voting each other,and britain can only relay on the Rep of Ireland for votes. The british acts awful every year why don't we just give up,and save us the embarrassment of coming last year after year.

I don't think we should stop competing, that's just being a bad loser. What I do think though is that we should have better judges with more common sense. Whoever put Scooch through was a maniac - that song really gets on my nerves...

I thought Michelle Gayle had the best song but Andy Abraham was quite good as well.

It doesn't make any difference anyway really, I suppose, we will probably do bad again this year as countries only give their neighbouring countries points.

I think it's quite a good song, sung by someone who can actually sing in tune.

Michelle Gayle's song had dodgy lyrics - bit embarrassing all round I thought.

Well, there's one thing that we can sure of instantly. It won't be the UK! The reason for this? Well, we're not considered pro European enough plus as one of the automatic qualifiers we send Europe any old rubbish really. If we wanted to win, we'd send a song with traditional British elements (morris dancing, bagpipes and a Welsh male voice choir) and put it to a disco beat. My guess (without hearing any of the other countries) would be one of the new ones. So let's say Serbia.

it is now beyond a joke, even terry wogan sounded fed up i know our song wasn't brilliant , but for heavens sake spain and albania didn't deserve more. i think ireland definately had the right idea. what do you think?

Hiya Jennie. I am Irish and I was ashamed of our entry although I do agree with you. Terry wants to resign and by Irelands entry, we have resigned too. It is such a waste of taxpayers money now and it is only a competion for the Balkan states. Lets give it a miss next year and find something more worthwhile to spend money on like reducing our shopping bills and gas/oil prices.

Who gets to decide which countries go to the live show, and which don't? They chucked out Ireland, Belgium, Switzerland, amongst many others before the public even got to SEE their entry. Yet they let silly acts like Spain through. I don't think anyone can judge on behalf of Europe, other than the public themselves.

The eastern European countries all vote for each other, as do the Scandinavians. The UK being an island has nobody but the Irish to vote for them. I think we should divide the "United Kingdom" into England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, to ensure WE can vote for each other, and win the contest! I know our entry was a bit crap this year, but this political voting has been going on for years, and it's stupid.

It's good for a laugh though.

When we won with Sandie Shaw singing Puppet on a String, it was because it was a bright, catchy tune - one that you would go away humming to...At that time the Italians (and some others) would enter a good voiced baritone with a sombre ballad...nil pois!! Eurovision then was all about looking for a song which could be enjoyed by one and all (whichever country you came from). Waterloo by ABBA was well received because again it didn't matter what language it was sung in, everyone and anyone could hum along to the music.

Having said that, a ballad could and did cinch it when the tune was well written. Johnny Logan with What's Another Year. Vicky Leandros (Luxemburg) with Apres Toi, was completely different from Boom Bang a Bang, but the sound was just right.

Let's face it - how many of the last 5 years' winning entrant songs have ever been heard again? Was a time when you couldn't avoid hearing the winner on the radio, and more often than not it reached, if not No 1, then somewhere in the top ten.

Now it's like most have said - a political scratching each other's backs venue - with contestants trying to outdo each other with the most bizarre costumes and set designs! It is no longer the song...

Reply:To tell you the honest truth , I only switched the Eurovision on at 10pm , just to see the voting , which is pure unadulterated politics and nothing to do with the talent shown. Terry Wogan was very funny with his 'caustic' humour - excellent!!. The contest is just a side-show. It's rapidly turning into the "Balcan Song Contest". These 'newly-freed' countries are only getting their own back after decades of percecution from the Big Bear of Russia. Of course the UK should keep going , if only for the laugh!!. The UK has always been in the sidelines in Europe , 'Island State' and all that.

The UK did not have the second worst song (and I am not being biased) and neither was the Serbian entry the best, I wouldnt even have put it in the top 10. Reply:Lots of reaction on Yahoo Answers about this! I think what we are seeing here is the rising authority of eastern bloc countries and their need to express themselves while carrying their allies. Britain is a nuisance in that ( although they all think this is the land of milk and honey ) and we are demoted for our actions in the middle east and being seen in support of the US. We will never get a good reaction for these very reasons, regardless of our musical prowess. Scooch were good last night, polished in performance and quite a snappy tune .... certainly not the best but worth more votes than the mockery offered by the others. We have two choices ... offer defiance and carry on or accept that this is a farce and simply pull the plug.

Reply:I actually thought there were a few good songs this year - Latvia, Germany and Hungary all tried something a bit different and had singers who could - well - sing.

I agree the voting system needs looking at, but whatever they do, you can't deny that Scooch's effort was poor. It was dated and weak, and relied too heavily on gaining votes through mentioning a few cities in Europe.

Reply:The song has nothing to do with the what we sing in the Eurovision song contest. It totally political. Not many European countries don't like Britain and the others only give the highest scores to their neighbours. For example Holland Luxembourg, Belgium and France vote for each other. All of the Scandinavian countries give the highest marks to each other. Allot of others vote strategically so as to keep their songs chances of winning. It is a total farce and not worth switching on. Even Terry Wogans commentary is always very flippant.

I cant figure it out, how on earth have some countries that clearly are not Europe, managed to sneak in to the main important cultural contest of european nations;such as Israel, Turkey, Belarus,serbia,albany, and Russia. Russia has had good songs thou, but still...isnt anythin holy anomore? Do we ave to accept anything in the name of solidarity and globalism? Will this lead someday to the fact that Eurovision takes one week and all asian countries participates as well?

Reply:From your list, Israel is the only purely non-European country. Russia has a massive European part (everything West of the Urals is part of Europe), and Belarus, Serbia, and Albania are firmly in Europe. Turkey is mostly Middle Eastern, but a small slice around Istanbul is in Europe. Other countries that may not exactly be in Europe are Armenia and Georgia, but they're included because they're somewhat transitional between Europe and the Middle East (they're Christian and were influenced by Greco-Roman culture, rather than being Arabic/Turkic/Persian and Muslim).

And Israel was probably included because much of Israeli culture has European roots (both Sephardim and Ashkenazim). Only the Mizrachi (Arabic, Persian, Yemenite) and Ethiopian aspects of Israel are totally non-European.

The map in the link shows what territories are part of Europe. Israel, Georgia, Armenia, and most of Turkey are not part of Europe. Everything else you listed is.

In response to your points, see below:

I don't exactly understand what you mean by "European spirit and culture." Are you talking about race? In that case, eastern Europeans are definitely Caucasians, and that includes Russians, Belarussians, Serbs, Albanians, etc. Are you talking about religion? In that case, with the exception of the Albanians (who are 50% Muslim and 50% Christian), they are mostly Christian. Are you talking about cultural predecessors? In that case, they are culturally descendant of Greco-Byzantine (Eastern Roman) civilization. These are pretty much definitions of "European" - Caucasian Indo-European Greek/Roman-influenced Christians.

You need to ask yourself what is it about the people you call Europeans that makes them different from those you consider not to be in your list, i.e. Russians, Belarussians, Serbs, and Albanians. Perhaps that will clarify some things in your own mind. Israelis and Turks clearly are not Europeans, but that is not being contested here.
Reply:Serbia is in Europe! I know for sure...I was born there! Anyways, I think that the Eurovision was invented to hear some good music and have some friendly competition. It has been going on for a long time now, and it is good that is beginning to get more popular. Think how many more viewers and voters there are when another country joins in. It just expands the fun of it to more people. It is more fun when there are lots of contestants than if there were just a few. Sure the competition is greater but this will only lead for the quality of the songs to get better! Serbia won last year! Wild Dancers also won one of the years before. Having other countries participate brings various cultures together. I don't think there would be anything wrong with it if Asian countries participated as well ;) . Have fun watching the Eurovision in a couple of months! I know I will!

Top of my list was Bosnia and Herzegovina and France. I thought the winners song was appauling, so cheesy and cringeworthy. The UK definately should not of come last, the song was alot better than many of the other countries that beat it.

I agree with Terry Wogan theres no point in Western Europe taken part anymore.

What I dont understand is why the votes arent scaled down, Eastern Europe is huge, the number of votes should reflect the populations of countries.

I agree that the last few years have been awful for Ireland, with atrocious songs and performers. But come on, a puppet turkey? I mean who is Dustin? As this years contest once again proved it is politics that rule the contest now., if contest could be used to discribe it. Please state if from the Uk. or Ireland.

Who wins has nothing to do with politics.

Who wins also has nothing to do with the quality of the song and/or the act.

People don't vote for quality - they vote for what they like best. So, this is a popularity contest and it stands to reason that people living in closer proximity will like similar types of music.

The problem is how votes are then converted to points, which means that the smaller adjacent nations have greater influence over the eventual winner, simply because there are a greater number of countries awarding similar points to similar entries. It wasn't such an issue in the day when only those entered were allowed to give points, but the points system is now outdated and no longer results in a fair contest, in my opinion.

There's much talk about how Eurovision unites Europe but, in actual fact the entire contest promotes division by actively telling us how each country has voted. There's no easy solution but surely it's time to count up all the *votes* in Europe and announce who is the winner that way? Then it would be seen as "Europe's" decision and nobody would have anything to grumble about.

I don't think that the UK should withdraw because it really looks like sour grapes if they do. As for us submitting better songs, that's too subjective to call. But it's a vicious circle - only expect our best songwriters/acts to go forward for Eurovision when they start believeing it's a fair contest. Right now, I really don't believe it is.

I'm from the U.K. and whilst i have absolutly NO problem with the fact that we got hardly any points (as we were totally rubbish) but the fact that that gender re-assingment won was disgracful.

There were a few really good acts but she (and we actually lol) weren't one of them i'm afraid.

Maybe Germany, Spain, France and UK should stop giving large amounts of money and just compete normally like the rest of the countries. That way they won't so annoyed when they don't do well. At any rate it will continue in the future to be countries such as Poland, Latvia and Turkey that win because they have large portions of their populations working and living in other countries in Western Europe and the Eastern bloc countries all vote for their neighbours.

The Western countries don't stand a chance. Maybe the sms and telephone voting should stop and we should go back to voting by judging-panel. However that still wouldn't get rid of the political issue but it would stop immigrants in the West voting for the home countries back in the East. Though the TV companies wouldn't get money from people voting in.

So at the end of the day maybe the UK should stop giving so much money but it definitely should not withdrawn. Instead let's all just sit back and laugh at the show. After all it is all just about entertainment and the TV broadcasters laughing all the way to the bank.

Personally I thought the show was full of excitement and fun and glam. Quite a gay theme this year!

Has it not occurred to you that people in different parts of Europe have different musical tastes – so a Lithuanian is more likely to like something from Estonia than from Spain? Also, how often have you heard the UK entry? Probably, if you’re into Eurovision, you’ve heard it a lot. Now what songs do you think the people in Bosnia have heard on their radios? The Serbian one? The Croatian one? Very likely. So they vote for songs that are familiar. After all, if it was political the Serbs would do very badly in the former Yugoslavia.

The first Eurovision contest was held in 1956 in Lugano, it was entitled "The Eurovision Grand Prix" and 7 countries entered the contest. Each participant was allowed to submit two songs in the language they wanted. The only restriction: the performance was limited to 3.5 minutes.

The winner was chosen by a jury consisting of two delegates from each country who could award between 1 and 10 points.

Lys Assia from Switzerland won, with her song "Refrain".

Do you think the Eurovision song contest is just a policital fix with neighbouring contries voting for each other and how do you think they can solve this if Britain was to drop out.

I reckon if countries submitted their candidates annonymously and countries voted for who they thought was best without knowing who's who we might stand a better chance.

I was thinking that too when it was on, if the countries didn't know which singers were their neighbours maybe then it'd be better for everyone concerned. otherwise give it a few years and alot of countries will pull out due to it being a political contest rather than a song contest.

i think its clearly political, we have no way of knowing if the results are even correct.. the government could easily say 'russia 12 points' when they didn't get that purely to cover their backs..

Reply:I think word politics should be used loosely here. It’s more of demographic voting or cultural. All Balkan countries have similar music per example, musicians known in Russia are also know in Ukraine, Lithuania etc. So it’s merely Diaspora votes and plus little something, but not politics. I mean, how stupid should you be to claim that Russia wont give gas to countries that don’t give her votes? Well, ask Terry Wogan.

Why and how does Israel participate at the EuroVision Song Contest because that country is not even at the European Continent?

This also happens in football where teams from countries, including Israel, that are geographically in Asia are allowed to enter the European Champions League.

However, on Eurovision, here's the 'offical' line:

"Eligibility to participate is not determined by geographic inclusion within the continent of Europe, despite the "Euro" in "Eurovision" — nor has it anything to do with the European Union. This explains the inclusion of Israel in the Contest, despite its not being a part of geographical or political Europe. In 1980, Morocco — a North African country — participated in the Contest"

Basically, just because a competition has Euro in the title doesn't mean that only countries actually in the continent of Europe can enter!

Career

Vanessa Paradis was discovered on the TV show L'École des fans in 1980. She recorded her first single La Magie des surprises-parties in 1985. After searching and searching with no results, I now believe that

there is no way that would allow watching the Eurovision Song Contest

in the USA. This is very sad. Being European myself, I had been happy

to present you a solution. But much to my surprise, I found nothing,

not even a live Web broadcast. It's a crying shame that hundreds of

millions of Americans have no chance to witness this famous event.

It might become available as a DVD from amazon.co.uk - as the 2004 and

2005 contests are available there.

Reply:Maybe the Balkan countries just play the best music, although I tend to prefer the songs that are shouted that tend to come from the Baltic countries. I think the eurovision song contest is great. The music is all wonderful and the personalities defy description. Sir Terry always does a wonderful job and it illustrates to the world how we can all get along together in a spirit of bonhommie. It shows that the nations have the maturity to laugh at themselves...I liked the Irish Turkey. Could you seriously imagine the Afrovision Song Contest would be so light hearted ?
Reply:Um last year the winner was Finland which is far from being a Balkan country. And people who make these remarks have no idea what they're talking about. In the end, the votes even themselves ot and the most popular song wins. That's why there actually IS a different winner every year.

Reply:The trouble with the Eurovision Song Contest is that it has absolutely nothing to do with vocal talent and everything to do with politics. For example the reason that Russia got so many points was that all the former eastern bloc countries gave it maximum points. We won't get any decent points due to our activities in Afghanistan and Iraq. Because of that we could put the best singers in the world in the Eurovision %26amp; we still won't get any points!
Reply:No, I think Terry should pull out and we should get a new presenter. Andy Abrahams wasn't that Eurovision-esque compared to France's entry, for example (that was hilarious!).

I think we as a nation take ourselves too seriously when it comes to competitions like this. Next year put in someone who failed 'Britain's got talent' and we might just get somewhere....

it would seem this contest has now become political rather than one of musical talent, whilst russia's entry was a worthy winner the british entry did not deserve to come last especialy when some of the other entries were an absolute joke, and had little, or nothing to do with musical talent and just another example of how eastern europe is just leaving a nasty taste with everything it comes into contact with. rebuild the wall and bring back the divide we were at least safe, and free from eastern european corruption, and the crime.

when Ireland used to win it was because they were experiencing a war with us, and the same when we won- we were being bombed by the IRA, now thats all over (touch wood) its on to the next war, as we are part of it and seem to be encroaching on territory so we loose the Eurovision out of spite, I was suprised the middle east didnt win again, but I am not really into politics, the only reason I knew about the Ireland/UK thing was because I live in London and witnessed it first hand. If you want to know why they take part, it is the same as in soccer (They take part at the European championship). They can`t take part in competitions in Africa or Asia (Political reasons) so the Europeans allowed them to take part in Europe.

It seems that, because of the political situation in Europe, the UK has no chance of winning anyway, so what's the point of even being in the competition.

Historically, apart from some obvious exceptions, not many of the songs do well after the contest, even if they do win.

Perhaps we could have something more entertaining on TV - and let the others get on with it !

Which is best - Eurovision Song Contest or Eurovision Dance Contest?

As a long term viewer of the Song Contest (since Lausanne 1989), I have to agree with the general view that the quality of the songs have gone down over the years (coupled with the debate about political voting).

This Dance Contest is certainly an interesting idea and from seeing the dances so far performed (up to Denmark in the second round), it looks promising. The only question mark that will remain is "Is the voting still poltical?" (which considering that the Austrians could vote for the Germans is still a possibilty)

I only watch the scoring part of it coz I like seeing the political point scoring lol.....I just can't sit thru the whole show anymore coz there are far too many countries involved in it which means it goes on for way too long.

In the 60's it was something we sat %26amp; watched together as a family but that was in the 60's not today.

I love seeing how many countries get the infamous nil points lol.

Its all a fix, the UK wouldn't have done very well, if it weren't for Malta, because lets face it, governmentally, no one likes England, so we're never going to do well.
Reply:I don't really know why i bother watching. I practically know who is going to win because everyon votes for their neighbours! Notice how the western european countries are last! And that's why england and ireland never get any votes. I think the only reason england gets into the eurovision is because the other cuntries want to watch us be humiliated. We used to be good, and so did other countries, but now it's just a joke. But i do love making comments about the other countries. Terry wogan's comments are the only thing good about it nowadays!

By the way, notice how the western european countries are sort of last!

I don't know where the Albanian roots have come from in this question. The winner came from Serbia (independent state territory) and the song was called "Molitva (Prayer)".

I honestly can't provide a reason to you that proves that the song's music had been in any way stolen from Albania.

Also, I am reeling still from the 23rd out of 24th position in the 2007 eurovision finals due to as Terry Wogan put it "block voting". Malta gave the UK their only 12 points. That was that.

yes the BBC is one of the founder members of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) and a major contributor to its funds.

This allows the BBC access to all the Members Television Facilities and services so enabling the BBC to be an European Leader in News, Sport, Weather and Occasions.

Hence why we don't have to compete in the Semi finals and get automatic entry to the finals. Same as France, Germany and Ireland.

Who really deserved to win last night Eurovision Song Contest?
I didn't mind Finland winning. It was different for a Eurovision entry. I thought the Swedish entry was best though. I thought the UK song was well performed but I don't like rap at all. The good thing is that all countries got points. I still think that it is a great shame that nieghbouring countries vote for each other rather than on the merits of the songs.

Their song was Layla (lejla). It was beautiful. Their performance was very good. Dresses were good and modest. They didn't try to be sexy or do weird things on the stage. Their music was "their". Not american or nor something else.. Music from Bosnia.

Not if it was sung by Mario Lanza. He died in 1959 and none of the Eurovision contests 1956 - 1959 had Come Prima as an entry. It was probably sung during the film "For the First Time" (known as Come Prima in Italy) which was released in 1959 and starred Mario as Tonio Costa.

If you check the website below it has all the years since 1956 on a drop down menu and has all the entries for each contest.

I'll put my hand up, I've been watching it every year since i was 8 (35 now) and loves the cheesiness of it all, great costumes, naff singing, Terry's voice overs getting more and more funny as he drinks more whiskey, and the fact that all the countries vote for their neighbours and no one votes for us! even turn down nights out when it's on. maybe that's why I'm still single?

Reply:Yes, I usually have a Eurovision Party where lots of people come to my house, we all watch it whilst drinking a lot and coincidentally it gets pregressively funnier as the evening wears on and the beer fridge gets emptier. I usually make up score sheets for people to fill in and we do a sweepstake on who will win.
Reply:It was brilliant when everyone sang in their native language. Several beers and teletext subtitles made for a hilarious night.

Unfortunately now it's all in in English and quite boring, though Lordi livened up the proceedings last year!!

Although not in Europe, Israel is allowed to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest as a member of the EBU and did so for the first time in 1973.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU; French: L'Union Européenne de Radio-Télévision ("UER"), and unrelated to the European Union) was formed on 12 February 1950 by 23 broadcasting organisations from Europe and the Mediterranean at a conference in the coastal resort of Torquay in Devon, England. In 1993, the International Radio and Television Organisation (OIRT), an equivalent organisation of broadcasters from Central and Eastern Europe, was merged with the EBU.

As of July 6, 2007, the EBU has 75 active members from 56 countries, and 43 associate members from a further 25. Members are radio and television companies, most of which are government-owned public service broadcasters or privately owned stations with public missions. Associate members aren't limited to those from European countries and the Mediterranean but include broadcasters from Canada, Japan, Mexico, India and Hong Kong, as well as many others. Active members are those whose states fall within the European Broadcasting Area, or otherwise those who are members of the Council of Europe.

Yeah of course, with a bottle of wine. Its the national pi** take of the year, why would anyone wanna miss it?! And I love watching my country being hated on by all the other countries %26amp; the fact that we practically fund the whole thing, i.e. if we wern't in it the damn thing wouldn't even exist cuz they wouldn't be able to afford to run it, just makes it even more ironic that no-one ever votes for us, dont you think?

In my opinion we should say f**k ya then, if you aint gunna vote for us, we aint gunna give you our money.

Its all to do with politics %26amp; all the neighbouring countries vote for each other. We dont have any neighbours %26amp; no-one likes our political choices, so thst explains a lot. However they're more than happy to come %26amp; live here, take our jobs, scrounge off our social %26amp; generally put a strain on our economy.

Why do people think that If the UK doesn’t win, it’s all down to politics. What evidence do you have for this?

Has it not occurred to you that people in different parts of Europe have different musical tastes – so a Lithuanian is more likely to like something from Estonia than from Spain? Also, how often have you heard the UK entry? Probably, if you’re into Eurovision, you’ve heard it a lot. Now what songs do you think the people in Bosnia have heard on their radios? The Serbian one? The Croatian one? Very likely. So they vote for songs that are familiar. After all, if it was political the Serbs would do very badly in the former Yugoslavia.

Anyway, the UK song was terrible. How many more times are the UK going to enter Bucks Fizz clones?

Eurovision is not political - 1. people will not vote for something they don't like and 2. if e.g Ukraine votes for Russia, it's not because they are neighbours, but because their music is closer to them and so is the language. If the show was political, the winner would be the same every year and it would be the country who has most neighbours. The fact that UK didn't give points to Ireland proves this.

I'm from continental Europe myself and my country, Slovakia, never takes part in this contest, so my opinion would be the most unbiased one. What you guys don't seem to realize is that people on the continent have different taste in music. But you choose to think it's political, because Terry Wogan says so and because you don't share a border with any country, instead of admitting your acts are simply not good.

It's not always because of bloc voting, but it is also because of poor music that the countries send there year after year (especially the big 4)!!! The quality has escaped from ESC lightyears ago and it is nothing but sheer stage circus these days!!! Nothing to do with music any more!!

Of course it's a farce! And it has especially become so since the Eastern-Bloc countries came into the contest. They seem to have no concept of 'fair-play' or 'sportsmanship'. For them the ESC has become a poltical battlefield where they vote along purely partisan and political lines. Before they even hear the entries of the Western European nations they already know how they are going to vote, i.e. neighbouring countries and, of course, Mother Russia, the Great Protectress, who must be appeased lest she decide to lean on the offending East European nation which failed to give her top or near- top marks.

Until the Western nations of Europe stop lavishly handing out points to the Eastern European nations and show more solidarity between them, they can wave goodbye to any hopes of ever again getting anywhere in the ESC, as Eastern Europe, the Ukraine and Russia have clearly shown the path they have chosen to go down, and that is to restrict all significant points awarded to their fellow former Eastern-Bloc countries. With that system solidly in place, no Western European nation can ever again hope to win the ESC, and they might as well stay home!

The ESC has been cynically turned into a political and partisan arena by the countries of Eastern Europe (and former Soviet satellites) which cannot conceive of awarding points on the purely artistic merits of a song. It is obviously a concept deeply alien to them and as a consequence they have all but killed off the ESC in terms of being a musical competition ostensibly based on talent and musical merit and has become a 'flatter my neighbour' exercise.

It would seem that the only way to counter nepotism and favouritism would be to assign a number to each of the competing countries, make them choose between English and Esperanto for their lyrics, and keep their identities a secret, so that people would then in effect be voting purely on the basis of the artistic and musical merit of an entry, but alas I doubt whether this impartial system would be either feasible or acceptable.

Oh NO! Is it 'The Eurovision Song Contest' time again?

As a child, my family and I used to look forward to the contest - we invited friends round and made it a fun evening ...all of us keeping our own scores.

Over the past 10 years or so, since the eastern blocks have started entering, it seems to have transformed from a music contest into a political rabble.

As judges appear to base points on their political relationships, it seems pointless to recognise the the event as a fair contest.

Even if the scores ARE based on the artists talent, they still show no validation because more than often, some countries share similar tastes in music or have similar languages. Also, some artists who are popular in some countries are unknown to others.

Isn't it time the organisers started to rethink and make some changes by somehow grouping the contesting countries?

Oh NO! Is it 'The Eurovision Song Contest' time again?
I dunno... part of me, a very small and niggly part (oo-er!) thinks they should just pack the whole thing in... as you say, it is all about political hugging and posturing for a day out next year rather than a musical competition... but then I don't think it has ever actually been a musical competition.

That said though, I think it is an opportunity for some of the other european nations to give exposure to their music industry (which we don't really need), though if the "stuff" we see and hear is indicative, then maybe they shouldn't bother?!

Just seen a quick run through of some of the past particiants on the TV, and frankly it is a competition for people that don't like music. I will happily support anyone that wants to be creative in a musical sense but if they think the rubbish that is presented is actually any good, then they should think again.

Watching it is not COMPULSORY.

The last time I watched it was in 1964, when Matt Monro came second, it was more fun to watch in those days.

Yes. Countries vote for their neighbors because of politics or similar taste.

The contest is supposed to be devoid of any political meaning, and just a celebration of world unity through music. But you and I both know that when dealing with countries, you can't leave politics out of it. So unfortunately, many of the votes are influenced by politics, even though they shouldn't be.

Reply:Obviously when countries have split into more countries, they have increased their voting potential, because they will appreciate the type of music from that area. Because a country splitting up is political that element is due to politics.

The voting is all done by the people of the countries now, so politics will come into it, if the UK want to improve their chances then taking the troops out of Iraq might help a bit, but it is a song contest between some very different countries, and the taste of the voters will make the biggest impact on the votes given.

Most voters will only have seen the songs from other countries once, the performances have to impress them on one showing. With different languages, different traditions and different views on the world, it is hard to impress all the voters.

This year I liked Sweden, and Russian entries the best, that wasn't a political view, but they performed in English, and I could understand them.

I voted for Sweden.

I liked Carola Häggqvists sone Invincible - because I'm Swedish.

I liked Lordis Hard Rock Halleluja - because I live in Finland.

But I also liked the song called Why do the angels cry (I can't remember the country, was it Cyprus?) and Belgiums Je t'adore by Kate Ryan (she didn't make it to the final on Saturday).

Yes it's true, after inventing the time machine in 1943 Adolf spent an amazing amount of time changing the face of popular music as we know it, especially the eurovision. It was Hitler's idea to have Sandie Shaw perform shoeless and for Buck Fizz to lose their skirts mid song but his biggest coup was keeping a young Lulu from winning the competition, thankful his plans to scupper Brotherhood of Man backfired.

I think if you should ever meet Lulu, you'd better do a runner. She's not THAT old. I think the song probably didn't win because there was a better song, but I believe you are thinking of Cliff Richard's song which is rumoured to have been stopped from winning by Franco's fascist party.

Yes it is time we dropped out of the Eurovision song contest, all the Eastern European countries vote for their own part of the world. Scandinavian countries vote the same way for their own people, Spain and France just stick together as well. To me its a waste of time for any British singer/song writers to even attempt to find a song for Europe, they are not going to win! If we are paying to be in this song contest then lets get out and then the money we pay for the tv licence can be spent on better programmes on the BBC. At the moment I feel the money for my licence is being spent on repeats and more repeats.

But I've heard that the UK are one of the counrties that pay for it, so I guess if we drop out then they are gonna have some funding problems. Also, all the other countries are gonna brand us as sore losers, and I'm sure that would annoy alot of people.

The last time UK won the Eurovision Song Contest was 10 years ago (1997) and had highest points ever awarded to a winning country / song. The song was "Love Shine A Light" by Katrina and The Waves, written by Kimberly Rue. The venue, The Point in Dublin and was co-hosted by Ronan Keating from Boyzone. He performed a fantastic song that showed the band had also turned that corner from boyband to manband!

IT`s only a pity, that the former russian and yugoslavian states didn`t vote the music but the country.
