Do you think Britain should stop competing in the Eurovision Song Contest?
It's becoming a farce with eastern european countries voting each other, and britain can only relay on the Rep of Ireland for votes. The british acts awful every year why don't we just give up,and save us the embarrassment of coming last year after year.
Do you think Britain should stop competing in the Eurovision Song Contest?
I don't think we should stop competing, that's just being a bad loser. What I do think though is that we should have better judges with more common sense. Whoever put Scooch through was a maniac - that song really gets on my nerves...

Do you think Andy Abraham was the best choice for the Eurovision Song Contest?
I thought Michelle Gayle had the best song but Andy Abraham was quite good as well.
It doesn't make any difference anyway really, I suppose, we will probably do bad again this year as countries only give their neighbouring countries points.
Do you think Andy Abraham was the best choice for the Eurovision Song Contest?
I think it's quite a good song, sung by someone who can actually sing in tune.
Michelle Gayle's song had dodgy lyrics - bit embarrassing all round I thought.
We won't win though, we don't have enough friends in Europe these days.
Anyone else think the winning song sounded like Sydney Youngblood's "If Only I Could"?
Reply:i agree with you, Michelle Gayle in my opinion would have been the better choice. it was more of the cheesy euro-vision song we all want and love.
he was good and i will still support him but Gayle would have been the better choice. i still have that song in my head
Reply:i like it
Reply:thank you for that I was taping it to watch after I had watched law and order don't need to bother now i take it!!!!!
Michelle Gayle did have more of the usual euovision feel about it i think.
Reply:i don't andy should of been the best choice surely theres other bands..........Any way whats the rules of the contest it would be better if we could get normal bands on it and not embaris our selves
Reply:Michelle Gayle was aWfUl. Out of all of them, Andy was the best. :)
Reply:Well, it couldn't be any worse than Ireland's choice which is a singing turkey!
Reply:I NEVER watch the eurovision it is absolutely sh!te in my opinion. Sorry for being blunt.
Reply:I thought Michelle should have won. It was a better song in my opinion.
Reply:No i dont think he was!
Reply:You are right about the neighbours thing but I think the group The Revelations singing It's You might of stood a good chance as they sounded like ABBA to me.
Reply:i think andys was sooo much better and he can actually sing. Michelle's was good and more of a eurovision song but definatley andy!!!
Reply:people will vote for him cos of pop idol - not a eurovision song
Reply:No Way!! Michelles song was so much more Eurovish!!
I love the Eurovision but its too political, nobody seems to look at the songs just what that country has done to them or has done for them

Did anyone else fall asleep during the Eurovision Song Contest?
awww... you mean.... you fell asleep therefore you did not vote for it.... This is the reason the Greek song was third instead of first??? I think you are responsible for this national drama!!!
heheheeee
btw. I was out having fun, did not really watch (or vote!) too!! :)

What do you think about the Eurovision Song Contest 2007....?
Who do you think will win ?
What do you think about the Eurovision Song Contest 2007....?
Well, there's one thing that we can sure of instantly. It won't be the UK! The reason for this? Well, we're not considered pro European enough plus as one of the automatic qualifiers we send Europe any old rubbish really. If we wanted to win, we'd send a song with traditional British elements (morris dancing, bagpipes and a Welsh male voice choir) and put it to a disco beat. My guess (without hearing any of the other countries) would be one of the new ones. So let's say Serbia.

Eurovision Song Contest: Why does UK automatically qualify when the others have the semis etc?
We put up lots of money for it apparently, so we are always guaranteed a place in the finals.
It doesn't guarantee us points though!

Eurovision Song Contest: Why does UK automatically qualify when the others have the semis etc?
Thats funny as my sister said the exact same thing last night :L
Yeah, apparently they do,just not for junior eurovision which is confusing :S
Britain are not alone if this is true, the host country also do,but perhaps you'd have to search on the eurovision site
But to be honest,It doesnt matter because the United Kingdom is a favourite in eurovision as it is always due to politics etc.
We could bring back Elvis Presley in british form and he could represent us and we still wouldnt win :@
xXx
Good luck :)

Reply:It's connected with how much money we donate to the running of the competition I think. It's not just the U.K., there are others who automatically qualify. It's the U.K.'s way of ensuring that Terry Wogan gets at least one night out per year. Bring on the Bailey's!
Reply:Because the UK is the main funder
They qualify automatically every year along with other major contributors.
Reply:I dont know i was wondering that too, after seeing the listings on tv last night? Cause Ireland ended up out! Honestly though, andy Abraham does not stand a chance
Reply:It's something to do with money and potential viewers, ie; large population.
Reply:I heard someone say the other day that it helps to stop the block voting.
Reply:Because we co-finance it, along with France, Spain, Germany and the hosting country.
Reply:It doesn't always!
Reply:cause were the best

Isn't it about time we stopped entering the eurovision song contest?
it is now beyond a joke, even terry wogan sounded fed up i know our song wasn't brilliant , but for heavens sake spain and albania didn't deserve more. i think ireland definately had the right idea. what do you think?
Isn't it about time we stopped entering the eurovision song contest?
Hiya Jennie. I am Irish and I was ashamed of our entry although I do agree with you. Terry wants to resign and by Irelands entry, we have resigned too. It is such a waste of taxpayers money now and it is only a competion for the Balkan states. Lets give it a miss next year and find something more worthwhile to spend money on like reducing our shopping bills and gas/oil prices.
Reply:I think it's a farce now anyway.
Who gets to decide which countries go to the live show, and which don't? They chucked out Ireland, Belgium, Switzerland, amongst many others before the public even got to SEE their entry. Yet they let silly acts like Spain through. I don't think anyone can judge on behalf of Europe, other than the public themselves.
The eastern European countries all vote for each other, as do the Scandinavians. The UK being an island has nobody but the Irish to vote for them. I think we should divide the "United Kingdom" into England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, to ensure WE can vote for each other, and win the contest! I know our entry was a bit crap this year, but this political voting has been going on for years, and it's stupid.
It's good for a laugh though.
Reply:yea. its ridicilous now. 14 points must have been best we've done in a long time.
But loads of the other acts were beyond a bloody joke!
Who actually likes those wierdos?!
waste of the singers time and waste of ours.
like the guy above me said all the countries vote for the country next to them. so all the Eastern europeans are gonna vote for each other and we're only gonna get Ireland to back us up.
Reply:Lol,i think we should still send terry though to make fun of all the other entries, and when it comes to our turn he can just put any old cliff richard song on the CD player,i mean let's face it we aint going to win anyway so why bother creating a new entrant! :-)
Reply:I disagree. At least it's one night out of 365 where I can have a good laugh at the other countries.
Anyway, if Wogan doesn't want to do it anymore he can always retire.
Reply:Eurovision song contest is so pointless. I think it would have a negative effect on the country if we won it,
Reply:There were LOTS of good songs but none of them got enough points. Well actually I wasn't hoping for anything else but still... I hate winner's song... So yeah it's about time we stop entering ESC.
Reply:Yes.
It is a joke.
And a political fix.
As an Irishman I think that we were robbed.
Dustin deserved his place.

and the West of Europe could have the 'Non politically voted Euro song of the Year Contest'? I know the British song was awful but the voting is getting to be a joke. And not a funny one at that! Some songs were actually decent but got hardly any votes. Opinions, everyone?

Do the singers during the Eurovision song contest sing live or Playback?
Live.
If it was playback, we wouldn't have heard so many offkey songs.

Should the Eurovision song contest make an appeal for the safe return of the abducted child in Portugal?
No i don`t think they shoud, there is more than enough coverage for 1 missing child, what about the thousand of others that go missing every year, Your`e becoming obsessive along with a few others....
Should the Eurovision song contest make an appeal for the safe return of the abducted child in Portugal?

How rubbish is the eurovision song contest, do any of us enjoy it, should the UK stop bothering with it?
i mean its all complete trash, the songs anyway, it would be ok if they were decent. oh and then theres the voting , yeah whatever its so pathetic.
How rubbish is the eurovision song contest, do any of us enjoy it, should the UK stop bothering with it?
When we won with Sandie Shaw singing Puppet on a String, it was because it was a bright, catchy tune - one that you would go away humming to...At that time the Italians (and some others) would enter a good voiced baritone with a sombre ballad...nil pois!! Eurovision then was all about looking for a song which could be enjoyed by one and all (whichever country you came from). Waterloo by ABBA was well received because again it didn't matter what language it was sung in, everyone and anyone could hum along to the music.
Having said that, a ballad could and did cinch it when the tune was well written. Johnny Logan with What's Another Year. Vicky Leandros (Luxemburg) with Apres Toi, was completely different from Boom Bang a Bang, but the sound was just right.
Let's face it - how many of the last 5 years' winning entrant songs have ever been heard again? Was a time when you couldn't avoid hearing the winner on the radio, and more often than not it reached, if not No 1, then somewhere in the top ten.
Now it's like most have said - a political scratching each other's backs venue - with contestants trying to outdo each other with the most bizarre costumes and set designs! It is no longer the song...
Reply:i think we need to give up noone ever wins for the song anymore its all political and the same countries vote for each other every year no matter what.
Reply:I think we should stop entering crap like Scooch every year. It might have worked 26 years ago but it doesn't now.
Reply:I agree, it's complete rubbish, it's time it was scrapped.
Reply:the UK should definitly stop entering, look whats happened the last couple of years. No offense (im from the UK) but no-one actually likes us. The UK and Ireland should not enter next year unless they are actually going to find an act that might win. !!
Reply:It's total rubbish but the really annoying thing is that we put up most of the money for it.
If it weren't for our t.v licence money from the BBC going to fund it it wouldn't even be on and the other nations have the cheek to never vote for us.
The only good thing about that is that we'll always have a place. we don't have to go through the eliminating rounds!!
If it weren't for Terry Wogan I wouldn't watch it. He's great!!
I don't watch the whole programme, just the voting as it's hilarious as you know who most of the countries will vote for as it's all political, Norway always vote for Sweden and Finland, Cyprus always vote for Greece!!
Biggest laugh of the month.

Reply:To tell you the honest truth , I only switched the Eurovision on at 10pm , just to see the voting , which is pure unadulterated politics and nothing to do with the talent shown. Terry Wogan was very funny with his 'caustic' humour - excellent!!. The contest is just a side-show. It's rapidly turning into the "Balcan Song Contest". These 'newly-freed' countries are only getting their own back after decades of percecution from the Big Bear of Russia. Of course the UK should keep going , if only for the laugh!!. The UK has always been in the sidelines in Europe , 'Island State' and all that.
Reply:It is a shame that the voting is spoiled by political and neighbouring votes. The UK did not have the second worst song (and I am not being biased) and neither was the Serbian entry the best, I wouldnt even have put it in the top 10. It should be based purely on the songs not some messed up bias voting.

I liked their performance, song was just in Eurovision style. Watch and listen it one more time, may be you would find some positive moments in it in comparison with the rest of the songs.
Though for me it is only N 4.
Reply:Lots of reaction on Yahoo Answers about this! I think what we are seeing here is the rising authority of eastern bloc countries and their need to express themselves while carrying their allies. Britain is a nuisance in that ( although they all think this is the land of milk and honey ) and we are demoted for our actions in the middle east and being seen in support of the US. We will never get a good reaction for these very reasons, regardless of our musical prowess. Scooch were good last night, polished in performance and quite a snappy tune .... certainly not the best but worth more votes than the mockery offered by the others. We have two choices ... offer defiance and carry on or accept that this is a farce and simply pull the plug.

the winner though, wtf?????
Reply:It's always been like that, the truth is the UK will probably never win again because most of Europe hates us because of war and politics.
I don't think we should pull out, because we are still part of Europe - we would look like sore losers, and we wouldn't be able to watch the cheesiness on TV! :(

Scooch is abysmal but I like that Russel one.

Not many European countries don't like Britain and the others only give the highest scores to their neighbours. For example Holland Luxembourg, Belgium and France vote for each other. All of the Scandinavian countries give the highest marks to each other. Allot of others vote strategically so as to keep their songs chances of winning. It is a total farce and not worth switching on. Even Terry Wogans commentary is always very flippant.

Why are un-european countries in Eurovision song contest?
I cant figure it out, how on earth have some countries that clearly are not Europe, managed to sneak in to the main important cultural contest of european nations;such as Israel, Turkey, Belarus, serbia, albany, and Russia. Russia has had good songs thou, but still...isnt anythin holy anomore? Do we ave to accept anything in the name of solidarity and globalism? Will this lead someday to the fact that Eurovision takes one week and all asian countries participates as well?
Why are un-european countries in Eurovision song contest?
Serbia IS in Europe!!!!
Look in your world atlas, or some map: south-east Europe:
above the Greece and FYR of Macedonia. Look right from Italy and Slovenia and you'll spot us!!!
Reply:Serbia is in Europe! There are tons of talented people, known worldwide that are from Serbia. Just because you don't know any doesn't mean that they don't exist! Report Abuse
Reply:From your list, Israel is the only purely non-European country. Russia has a massive European part (everything West of the Urals is part of Europe), and Belarus, Serbia, and Albania are firmly in Europe. Turkey is mostly Middle Eastern, but a small slice around Istanbul is in Europe. Other countries that may not exactly be in Europe are Armenia and Georgia, but they're included because they're somewhat transitional between Europe and the Middle East (they're Christian and were influenced by Greco-Roman culture, rather than being Arabic/Turkic/Persian and Muslim).
And Israel was probably included because much of Israeli culture has European roots (both Sephardim and Ashkenazim). Only the Mizrachi (Arabic, Persian, Yemenite) and Ethiopian aspects of Israel are totally non-European.
The map in the link shows what territories are part of Europe. Israel, Georgia, Armenia, and most of Turkey are not part of Europe. Everything else you listed is.
In response to your points, see below:
I don't exactly understand what you mean by "European spirit and culture." Are you talking about race? In that case, eastern Europeans are definitely Caucasians, and that includes Russians, Belarussians, Serbs, Albanians, etc. Are you talking about religion? In that case, with the exception of the Albanians (who are 50% Muslim and 50% Christian), they are mostly Christian. Are you talking about cultural predecessors? In that case, they are culturally descendant of Greco-Byzantine (Eastern Roman) civilization. These are pretty much definitions of "European" - Caucasian Indo-European Greek/Roman-influenced Christians.
You need to ask yourself what is it about the people you call Europeans that makes them different from those you consider not to be in your list, i.e. Russians, Belarussians, Serbs, and Albanians. Perhaps that will clarify some things in your own mind. Israelis and Turks clearly are not Europeans, but that is not being contested here.
Reply:Serbia is in Europe! I know for sure...I was born there! Anyways, I think that the Eurovision was invented to hear some good music and have some friendly competition. It has been going on for a long time now, and it is good that is beginning to get more popular. Think how many more viewers and voters there are when another country joins in. It just expands the fun of it to more people. It is more fun when there are lots of contestants than if there were just a few. Sure the competition is greater but this will only lead for the quality of the songs to get better! Serbia won last year! Wild Dancers also won one of the years before. Having other countries participate brings various cultures together. I don't think there would be anything wrong with it if Asian countries participated as well ;) . Have fun watching the Eurovision in a couple of months! I know I will!
Reply:I think this has more to do with countries being members of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union?) than being part of Europe/"European".

Who do you think should have won the Eurovision song contest this year?
Top of my list was Bosnia and Herzegovina and France. I thought the winners song was appauling, so cheesy and cringeworthy. The UK definately should not of come last, the song was alot better than many of the other countries that beat it.
I agree with Terry Wogan theres no point in Western Europe taken part anymore.
What I dont understand is why the votes arent scaled down, Eastern Europe is huge, the number of votes should reflect the populations of countries.
Who do you think should have won the Eurovision song contest this year?
I agree with old Tel. It isn't a 'song' contest any more. More a political stage for the Eastern Europeans. It's ridiculous. We may as well just not bother any more. I feel sorry for Andy Abrahams - he most certainly didn't deserve to come last.
Reply:I don't blame Wogan for wanting to pack it in. What a load of old cobblers. the Eastern block countries have cornered the market and will never let it go. Can anyone either hum or sing the Russian entry ? As for the whirling Dervish skater, the frantic violinist and the mournfull singer Time to pull out and let them get on with it, the whole thing has become a huge JOKE.
Reply:I loved Israel and Turkey for some reason. The UK certainly wasnt memorable or amazing, but it deserved more than last place. I thought the winner was abysmal. Bland, formulaic cak.
Reply:Not a hope in hell out song was absolutely crap, the Latvian song was brilliant.
Reply:I totally agree with you. My top of the list was Serbia, France , UK, Turkey and Bosnia.
Reply:err no idea didnt watch it but for once i agree with wogan i think even if madonna was representing England we wouldn't win
Reply:I think that they were all really bad and they should lock them all in until they all promise never to sing again
Reply:Finland.
Reply:France, Spain or Azerbaijan.. Russia was kinda nice though

I want to start a campaign to have Dustin selected to represent Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008.?
Dustin is the ideal candidate to represent Ireland this year.I am tired of the Eastern European countries with their "block voting" Granted Ireland has had in recent years rubbish songs and rubbish candidates and I feel that Dustin is not only a novel candidate but the best idea that RTE has come up with since Riverdance. So lets get together and show Eurovision our prize turkey and bring the glory back to Ireland.I know we have not even heard the "Dustin entry" yet but it has to be better than the turkeys "Dervish" we had flying the flag for Ireland last year.So people get together and get this Dustin campaign off the ground.
Heres the website for my campaign below or if this does not work go to flickr.com and search the group called

Me and the wife are all for it!!
I'm not Irish but the wife is and she speaks fondly of this fine turkey. She has followed his progress from his debut on The Den and is now encouraging our 3 year old (and me!!) to 'stuff' the opposition and tuck into the turkey (Sorry).
All the best - even Bernard Matthews would approve!
Go Dustin.

I agree that the last few years have been awful for Ireland, with atrocious songs and performers. But come on, a puppet turkey? I mean who is Dustin? He's not actually a real turkey - who is the person who controls him? I think it's bizarre and embarrassing that this entry is even being considered!

Do you think Britain have a chance in winning the eurovision song contest?
I actuall think they may have a slight chance this year. What do you think. I think that Ukraine is excellent!!

I can't see us winning (from UK)

Reply:I think they will win. Last year, Scooch totally blew it for us! No-one even listen's to Scooch anymore! If that is Ukraines taste in music, then I feel sorry for them. :

How Do i enter the Eurovision song contest as the UK's entry?
You have to write a really shockingly awful song with a teeny bopping techno beat behind it and get some blondes to dance behind you wearing bikinis.
Good luck.
Good luck.
Is anybody going to be watching the Eurovision song contest tonight?
Yes about 100 million people, hence why the broadcasters show it

Not sure about that but all I know and can say right now is that you are very sweet and I really love you, because...every time I see you, I feel like....when the time will come, to say good bye....that's hard.
Goodbye-
Funny how that's such a hard thing to say
Now it's time to let go but,
never thought I'd feel this way.
Promised not to be sad but,
we both knew I was lyin
Gotta fight back the tears cause,
Can't let you see me crying..
You're more than just my best friend.....
What makes me misty most of all,
in our final, curtain call...
is knowin that I won't see you...

Please forgive me...I get a little emotional at times.

Do you think that the Uk and Ireland should withdraw from the Eurovision Song Contest?
As this years contest once again proved it is politics that rule the contest now., if contest could be used to discribe it. Please state if from the Uk. or Ireland.
Do you think that the Uk and Ireland should withdraw from the Eurovision Song Contest?
Who wins has nothing to do with politics.
Who wins also has nothing to do with the quality of the song and/or the act.
People don't vote for quality - they vote for what they like best. So, this is a popularity contest and it stands to reason that people living in closer proximity will like similar types of music.
The problem is how votes are then converted to points, which means that the smaller adjacent nations have greater influence over the eventual winner, simply because there are a greater number of countries awarding similar points to similar entries. It wasn't such an issue in the day when only those entered were allowed to give points, but the points system is now outdated and no longer results in a fair contest, in my opinion.
There's much talk about how Eurovision unites Europe but, in actual fact the entire contest promotes division by actively telling us how each country has voted. There's no easy solution but surely it's time to count up all the *votes* in Europe and announce who is the winner that way? Then it would be seen as "Europe's" decision and nobody would have anything to grumble about.
I don't think that the UK should withdraw because it really looks like sour grapes if they do. As for us submitting better songs, that's too subjective to call. But it's a vicious circle - only expect our best songwriters/acts to go forward for Eurovision when they start believeing it's a fair contest. Right now, I really don't believe it is.
Reply:Totally agree.
I'm from the U.K. and whilst i have absolutly NO problem with the fact that we got hardly any points (as we were totally rubbish) but the fact that that gender re-assingment won was disgracful.
There were a few really good acts but she (and we actually lol) weren't one of them i'm afraid.
We should totally boycott it.
Reply:No. It is only foreigners who take it seriously, people in the uk only watch it to hear Terry Wogan laugh at the rest of them. Anyway, Ireland sometimes even win it.
Reply:Withdraw? Don't be silly!! It's only a stupid song contest for fun. Remember the show has always been political.
Maybe Germany, Spain, France and UK should stop giving large amounts of money and just compete normally like the rest of the countries. That way they won't so annoyed when they don't do well. At any rate it will continue in the future to be countries such as Poland, Latvia and Turkey that win because they have large portions of their populations working and living in other countries in Western Europe and the Eastern bloc countries all vote for their neighbours.
The Western countries don't stand a chance. Maybe the sms and telephone voting should stop and we should go back to voting by judging-panel. However that still wouldn't get rid of the political issue but it would stop immigrants in the West voting for the home countries back in the East. Though the TV companies wouldn't get money from people voting in.
So at the end of the day maybe the UK should stop giving so much money but it definitely should not withdrawn. Instead let's all just sit back and laugh at the show. After all it is all just about entertainment and the TV broadcasters laughing all the way to the bank.
Personally I thought the show was full of excitement and fun and glam. Quite a gay theme this year!
Tóg é go bóg é agus bain sult as!
(From Ireland)
Reply:I am from the UK %26amp; yes we should draw out.We are wasting our money.
Reply:Yes we should, but we won't as the Uk is one of the main contributors (cost). Without our money they would have difficulties funding it!! UK.
Reply:Not only should we withdraw from the contest but we should withdraw from European union. Do we really need to be part of all this ?
By the way, isn't it funny how none of these countries vote for us but they all want to come and live over here???
Reply:what ever, the program has got from bad to shite..!
Reply:No, I think they should just send better entries. Both Ireland and the UK are capable of making much better music than their contributions in the past few years.
I think that in the UK they lack ambition to send a decent entry (or maybe they are having a hard time getting good singers to participate because of the bad reputation the Eurovision has in the UK for being crappy).
Ireland... I wonder if they got tired of hosting it or something. They had so many great songs in the past, but lately their entries have been disappointing.
I'm from neither, I'm from Iceland.
Reply:no we have all got to have a go
Reply:yes,it is a joke, and that concludes the Irish vote.
Reply:Absolutely not! We should learn from our appalling performances and improve both our musical input and our political decisions. That way we will gain points and friendship with the countries nearest to us.
Reply:Nope! But they should pick better songs to represent them, then we would once again have a chance of winning! Crap songs get NUL points, like that Scooch rubbish!
Reply:yah i think so
Reply:Absolutely not. We should stay in unless we lose our sense of humour about it or start taking it too seriously and become genuinely disgruntled. It is not the contest, it is the complete randomness of the acts and the glorious predictablility and tradition of the results.
From the UK.
Reply:it's been like that for years now, all the countries vote for the ones they want to be political allies with regardless of wether the songs are any good. it isn't a contest it's a stitch up. mind you, it doesn't help that the british entry was pathetic drivel, at least a couple of other countries have tried to do something a bit different and not the euro drivel that we have tried to churn out for it.
Reply:Absolutely they should withdraw! The whole thing is an insult to music anyway!
(I'm in Huddersfield, UK)
Reply:No, But i do agree with you. Next year Ireland should enter my lovely horse, LOL! Now that would win.
Reply:Yes.. i live in Portugal and we dont even enter.
Reply:CALM DOWN, CALM DOWN
It’s only a game.
Why do people think that If the UK doesn’t win, it’s all down to politics. What evidence do you have for this?
Has it not occurred to you that people in different parts of Europe have different musical tastes – so a Lithuanian is more likely to like something from Estonia than from Spain? Also, how often have you heard the UK entry? Probably, if you’re into Eurovision, you’ve heard it a lot. Now what songs do you think the people in Bosnia have heard on their radios? The Serbian one? The Croatian one? Very likely. So they vote for songs that are familiar. After all, if it was political the Serbs would do very badly in the former Yugoslavia.
Anyway, the UK song was terrible. How many more times are the UK going to enter Bucks Fizz clones?
Do you think that the Uk and Ireland should withdraw from the Eurovision Song Contest?

However that still wouldn't get rid of the political issue but it would stop immigrants in the West voting for the home countries back in the East. Though the TV companies wouldn't get money from people voting in.
So at the end of the day maybe the UK should stop giving so much money but it definitely should not withdrawn. Instead let's all just sit back and laugh at the show. After all it is all just about entertainment and the TV broadcasters laughing all the way to the bank.
Personally I thought the show was full of excitement and fun and glam. Quite a gay theme this year!
Tóg é go bóg é agus bain sult as!

Who is going to win the Eurovision Song Contest this year?
Don't answer if you are going to say stuff like its rigged or who cares, please can you just answer by saying upto 3 countries. Thanks

Who won the first eurovision song contest ..................?
The first Eurovision contest was held in 1956 in Lugano, it was entitled "The Eurovision Grand Prix" and 7 countries entered the contest. Each participant was allowed to submit two songs in the language they wanted. The only restriction: the performance was limited to 3.5 minutes.
The winner was chosen by a jury consisting of two delegates from each country who could award between 1 and 10 points.
Lys Assia from Switzerland won, with her song "Refrain".

Eurovision Song Contest?
Do you think the Eurovision song contest is just a policital fix with neighbouring contries voting for each other and how do you think they can solve this if Britain was to drop out.
I reckon if countries submitted their candidates annonymously and countries voted for who they thought was best without knowing who's who we might stand a better chance.
Eurovision Song Contest?
I was thinking that too when it was on, if the countries didn't know which singers were their neighbours maybe then it'd be better for everyone concerned. otherwise give it a few years and alot of countries will pull out due to it being a political contest rather than a song contest.
Reply:anonymously wouldn't work as other countries send in their famous singers - other countries would recognise them..
i think its clearly political, we have no way of knowing if the results are even correct.. the government could easily say 'russia 12 points' when they didn't get that purely to cover their backs..
we should have a western europe competion and an eastern competition then versus eachother and voted for by judges like before.. this isn't working anymore!
Reply:Yes!
Reply:TBH i think Britain should leave as it is all about poltics (not that it's ever been about music) XD lol
Yeah thats a good idea but it's one those things that will never change O_O
Reply:I think that it has become a popularity contest and it's not fair that countries who are disliked but have a great song are put down because of political issues. I used to have fun watching the Eurovision Song Contest with my family but now I actually expect the UK to lose. It's not right! :(
Reply:I think word politics should be used loosely here. It’s more of demographic voting or cultural. All Balkan countries have similar music per example, musicians known in Russia are also know in Ukraine, Lithuania etc. So it’s merely Diaspora votes and plus little something, but not politics. I mean, how stupid should you be to claim that Russia wont give gas to countries that don’t give her votes? Well, ask Terry Wogan.
Reply:good idea but no
UK sends awful songs
Reply:It's ALWAYS been a fix, Baltic countries vote for each other, former Yugo countries vote for each other, Greece and Cyprus, you name it, Britain should stay out of it, except that the BBC funds the whole thing, it's a joke and whoever wins, the song is so bad that you never hear them again, it stinks, best thing is listening to Terry Wogan taking the pee!
Reply:I think that countries should all have to sing in the same language [prob English] but the name of the country who is on the tv should not appear on the screen.
It sounds like a good idea - but I don't think it would happen somehow!

EuroVision Song Contest!?
Why and how does Israel participate at the EuroVision Song Contest because that country is not even at the European Continent?
EuroVision Song Contest!?
This also happens in football where teams from countries, including Israel, that are geographically in Asia are allowed to enter the European Champions League.
However, on Eurovision, here's the 'offical' line:
"Eligibility to participate is not determined by geographic inclusion within the continent of Europe, despite the "Euro" in "Eurovision" — nor has it anything to do with the European Union. This explains the inclusion of Israel in the Contest, despite its not being a part of geographical or political Europe. In 1980, Morocco — a North African country — participated in the Contest"
Basically, just because a competition has Euro in the title doesn't mean that only countries actually in the continent of Europe can enter!
Lets hope some more metal monsters like Lordi win again this year!!
Reply:Lol, not only Israel but there is also Armenia and Georgia.
ESC has become a silly political contest nowadays, unfortunatelly!

why were the decent countries kicked out...?
Eurovision was never a masterpiece of talent but it was fun.... now what is the point...? 2 predictable and political...
I think it should have been kept with all countries being allowed to compete.

Don't get your knickers in a twist, this is no longer a song contest, it is a political platform.

Last night's results confirm my initial response to this question.
It has to be said GB did no better than I expected from such an abysmal entry. The young lady originally chosen by Terry Wogan would have made a much better fist of it.
Reply:it's a load of rubbish anyway
Reply:Wow you know your stuff! I will be watching as I like terry wogans comments they make me laugh, I know that we wont win because everyone hates us. It is predictable because they just vote for the country next door but still its entertaining.
Reply:I think it would be impossible for all the European countries to compete, although (sad but true) I would love it if it were possible. However politics seems to have increasingly come to the fore in the past few years I think it is a shame, but unfortunately a way of the world. I just would love for some obscure European country to win for a change, so we can really feel proud!

Eurovision song contest?
Vanessa Chantal Paradis (born December 22, 1972 in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, Val-de-Marne, France) is a French singer and actress.
Career
Vanessa Paradis was discovered on the TV show L'École des fans in 1980. She recorded her first single La Magie des surprises-parties in 1985. Although it was not a hit, it paved the way for the song with which she would become internationally famous - Joe le Taxi in 1987, while she was still only 14 years old. It was #1 in France for 14 weeks and, unusually for a song sung in French, was released in the UK the following year, where it reached #3. It was taken from her first album M%26amp;J (it stands for Marilyn %26amp; John) which, although it gained a number 13 placing in France, drew little attention in Britain and did not chart.
In 1992, now 19 and working in the U.S. with American rock musician Lenny Kravitz, who was her boyfriend for a while, Paradis began work on a new album sung in English, in which she had become fluent. Written and produced by Kravitz, the album, titled Vanessa Paradis, topped the French chart and briefly made the UK listings (number 45). One of the singles from it was Be My Baby, which made number 5 in France and gave her other Top 10 UK hit (number 6). She has since appeared in several films, most famously 1999's La fille sur le pont, a black and white romance co-starring Daniel Auteuil, and 2004's Mon Ange.
In 1991, Paradis promoted a fragrance for Chanel, entitled Coco. In the advertisement, she is dressed in all black and feathers, portraying a bird swinging in a cage. In 2004 she promoted Chanel's new handbags called Ligne Cambon. She is now promoting Chanel's The New Mademoiselle handbag. On the musical side, she is included in the French children's album "Le Soldat Rose". Paradis currently released a new album (Divinidylle) and will be touring in October. She is also coming out with two new movies: La Clef and Le Soldat rose.
Family
Since 1998, Paradis has been in a relationship with American actor Johnny Depp. Paradis caught Depp's eye in a hotel lobby in Paris while he was there shooting the film The Ninth Gate (1999). Depp and Paradis are not married. They have a daughter, Lily-Rose Melody Depp (born May 27, 1999), and a son, John Christopher "Jack" Depp III (born April 9, 2002). Interviewed by Weekend Knack Magazine with Depp and Paradis' friend, the film producer Jai Hanlyn, Vanessa said when asked about marriage "God, we've been married for so long already! Can you be more married than having children together, then?" They divide their time between houses in the Hollywood Hills and their farm in the South of France, and also own apartments in Paris, Manhattan and an island in the Bahamas. Paradis' 2000 album Bliss, another French chart topper, was dedicated to Depp and their daughter. Lily Rose was in the hospital in London for five days in March 2007, reportedly with an E. coli infection.

I voted for him!!!! Im delighted to see that he won.....C'Mon Ireland
Reply:Huh? What are you talking about? You're in the wrong category here.
Do you agree with political voting in the Eurovision Song Contest?
Or should it be about the song NOT the country.
Do you agree with political voting in the Eurovision Song Contest?
It should be about the song, time we pulled out as it is only a politics show now....

Reply:It's called the Eurovision SONG contest for a reason...and that's voting for the song on the song's merits, not for any political reason, therefore political voting tends to defeat the object of the competition.
Reply:It's about the song.. However, you do know that neighbours always tend to vote for each other.. So i guess that's why they made those changes. Also, they usually want to get rid of the UK, no matter what.
Reply:I don't..but it's just a contact, countries do not earn money or anything =)
Reply:Britain should pull out of that contest - i have watched for years and never miss it and this year was one of the best but the political voting makes a mockery of the show - no matter how talented you are it only depends on which country you are from.
Reply:it should be about the song not the country...although thats utopia
Reply:NO!!!
Why do people need to mess politics in EVERYTHING!!!!???
Reply:definitely not - I think we should pull out of the Eurovision Contest altogether. It isn't a programme for music lovers.
Reply:It's always been political.
Reply:I dint think it matters. I don't think the competition matters. It really is a waste of resources, time and energy. Still ... it keeps Terry Wogan off the sauce once a year.

How can I watch Eurovision song contest in the USA?
I know that there may be a webcast from the official website, but when will it be on? Is there a charge to watch? Is the entire show going to be webcast? Is any channel in American TV going to show it?
How can I watch Eurovision song contest in the USA?
hi, you can use this site to watch eurovision when you want!
http://public.di-ve.com/streaming/main.a...
click on 'On demand library'
and choose '20-May-2008 - Eurovision Song Contest -...NEW!'
here is the direct link for it :
http://public.di-ve.com/streaming/on_dem...
all you have to do is click on 'View' in the box on the right!
the other semifinal and the final will be added on the library after they are shown, and you can watch whenever you feel you want to.
i dont know the time difference between malta and the usa, but that site i told you about first also streams the eurovision live. just click on 'TV and Live Events' and choose what you want to see. here in malta, eurovision begins at 9.00 pm. if you find out the time difference between malta and usa you can watch it live!
hope this helped, and happy viewing!!
Reply:If you know someone in one of the participating countries who has a capture card then you can have them point a camcorder to their TV and use the software DVdriver to make the video source simulate a webcam and then you can use skype to watch it over the internet.

Eurovision song contest?
Does anybody have the complete set of Cds from 1956 to 2000 of the Eurovision Song Contest. I have been looking for them for many years and am willing to pay any price for the whole lot!
Eurovision song contest?
Sorry, the best retrospective I could find was "50 YEARS OF EUROVISION SONG CONTEST, 1981-2005", which is available at this site:
http://www.geocities.com/tasper70/eurovi...
But none of the older stuff is there, definitely not dating back to 1956.
Reply:i am not sure, but you can get most of them off ebay. But not the 1964 eurovision as the film was destroyed
Reply:heres a song of the contest

Are there any TV channels in the US that will broadcast the Eurovision song contest?
If not, where can I get a recording of the contest?
Are there any TV channels in the US that will broadcast the Eurovision song contest?
After searching and searching with no results, I now believe that
there is no way that would allow watching the Eurovision Song Contest
in the USA. This is very sad. Being European myself, I had been happy
to present you a solution. But much to my surprise, I found nothing,
not even a live Web broadcast. It's a crying shame that hundreds of
millions of Americans have no chance to witness this famous event.
It might become available as a DVD from amazon.co.uk - as the 2004 and
2005 contests are available there.

What's the point of the Eurovision Song Contest anymore?
...now that we know people don't vote for thier favorite song anymore. The Balkan countries all vote for eachother making them winners every year.
What's the point of the Eurovision Song Contest anymore?
the point is that you fill ur saturday nights and the boring weekdays nights with something interesting fun and gripping,we don't care who wins, that's not the only point of the contest, just the feeiling that with you another 200 mill people from all around the world are watching this makes it even more exciting. and just to remind you last year's winner was finland with lordi!hello finland is not a balkan country, improve ur geography knowledge!turley is not a balkan country(2003 winner) denmark is not a balkan country(2000 winner) plzz the next time u wish to comment something think it twice...
Reply:Maybe the Balkan countries just play the best music, although I tend to prefer the songs that are shouted that tend to come from the Baltic countries. I think the eurovision song contest is great. The music is all wonderful and the personalities defy description. Sir Terry always does a wonderful job and it illustrates to the world how we can all get along together in a spirit of bonhommie. It shows that the nations have the maturity to laugh at themselves...I liked the Irish Turkey. Could you seriously imagine the Afrovision Song Contest would be so light hearted ?
Reply:Um last year the winner was Finland which is far from being a Balkan country. And people who make these remarks have no idea what they're talking about. In the end, the votes even themselves ot and the most popular song wins. That's why there actually IS a different winner every year.
Reply:I watch it every year simply because it is so funny to watch. Terry Wogan's little monologues make it superb.
It really makes no difference who wins because, lets face it, we never hear of any of the winning groups or songs again, do we?
Reply:There is no point anymore. I only watch it because of Terry Wogan and when he decides not to do it anymore I think thousands of viewers won't bother to watch.
Reply:When is it ? was it done already ? I saw the profile of the "singers " idiots ......it looks like everyone is voting for the worst
Reply:I love watching The Eurovision Song Contest as you get to make fun of the country's which are bad. Terry Wogan is also really good at presenting it thats mainly why we watch it.
Reply:There never was any point to the contest.
Reply:Its a pretty good advert for Europe as a whole
EVERYONE CHEATS AND THE UK PICKS UP THE BILL!!!
Reply:Keeps Terry Wogan in a job...
Reply:ooh dear that Terry Wogan is a stud muffin

Do you agree with Sir Terry that Western Europe should not enter Eurovision Song Contest again? Reform poss.??
Wogan unhappy at UK Eurovision flop
Press Assoc. - 2 hours 56 minutes ago
Veteran Eurovision Song Contest commentator Sir Terry Wogan has cast doubt on whether he would be involved in covering the event again.
He said it was "no longer a music contest" and that prospects for Western European participants were "poor".
He spoke out near the end of his TV commentary after Britain's entry Andy Abraham had finished joint last of the 25 finalists.
See http://bbc.co.uk/news %26amp; click 'Have your say'
Scroll down %26amp; you see their invitation to ask for debates that you feel folk will most enjoy: click %26amp; ask @ it, OK?
Gotta be a good laugh, eh?
"The BBC has been deluged by millions of members of Yahoo Answers, so we are pleased to say..."
WHAT would they be pleased to say?
There's every chance that Tel has pulled a deliberate 'get 'em over a barrel' negotiation ploy, yes?
Would East EU wanna go on if West EU pulls out?
I think not - do you?
Tel needs TOG/TYGs
Do you agree with Sir Terry that Western Europe should not enter Eurovision Song Contest again? Reform poss.??
Has it EVER been a music contest????!!!
Reply:The trouble with the Eurovision Song Contest is that it has absolutely nothing to do with vocal talent and everything to do with politics. For example the reason that Russia got so many points was that all the former eastern bloc countries gave it maximum points. We won't get any decent points due to our activities in Afghanistan and Iraq. Because of that we could put the best singers in the world in the Eurovision %26amp; we still won't get any points!
Reply:No, I think Terry should pull out and we should get a new presenter. Andy Abrahams wasn't that Eurovision-esque compared to France's entry, for example (that was hilarious!).
I think we as a nation take ourselves too seriously when it comes to competitions like this. Next year put in someone who failed 'Britain's got talent' and we might just get somewhere....
Edit- Why, oh WHY is Israel still allowed to particpate? They aren't even in Europe.....
Reply:Yes I do agree. Its a joke the way they vote. If they want to vote like that make them pay for it. I'm not just saying this because the UK didn't win, none of the west countries got any sort of votes. I know its only a bit of fun but it must cost a fortune to put on to not have a chance at all of winning.
Reply:i think we should pull out. The uk fund the contest through bbc and i would love to see what would happen if we pulled out and stopped the funding. We dont get votes because we go through each yr even if we are last because they cant afford for us not to be in it
Reply:that's not the British spirit...pulling out just because we lose!! however...i'd like the public vote lark stopped...i think it should go back to the days when each country had a panel of judges %26amp; allocated the points that way...the public are biased!
Reply:The UK should pull out of the contest till there is a better and more fairer voting system....
Reply:we shudnt enter. Andy Abraham was sorta crap as well but we didnt lose because of him... WHY DIDN'T WE JUST PAY LEONA TO WIN IT FOR US?????
Reply:You must admit that he has a point.
He correctly guessed who everyone was going to vote for before they had actually started listing thier votes.
If Sir Terry goes then I won't watch it again. I think he makes it must see TV %26amp; without him it will just be another below average reality show.
Perhaps this is a sign that it has run its course %26amp; should be put to bed once %26amp; for all.
BTW. andy Abrahams deserved so much more than 14 points. He did really well with a song that was one of the strongest entries we have had for years. Poor guy must be gutted.

Is eurovision song contest now a political competition?
it would seem this contest has now become political rather than one of musical talent, whilst russia's entry was a worthy winner the british entry did not deserve to come last especialy when some of the other entries were an absolute joke, and had little, or nothing to do with musical talent and just another example of how eastern europe is just leaving a nasty taste with everything it comes into contact with. rebuild the wall and bring back the divide we were at least safe, and free from eastern european corruption, and the crime.
Is eurovision song contest now a political competition?
i totaly agree. it is just pathetic...Andy did a great job. Even if we sent the best singer in the world on there noone would vote for us! They should be ashamed that they never vote for talent. Its so annoying!
Reply:It always was, even in the "old days"
when Ireland used to win it was because they were experiencing a war with us, and the same when we won- we were being bombed by the IRA, now thats all over (touch wood) its on to the next war, as we are part of it and seem to be encroaching on territory so we loose the Eurovision out of spite, I was suprised the middle east didnt win again, but I am not really into politics, the only reason I knew about the Ireland/UK thing was because I live in London and witnessed it first hand. But even Terry Wogan at the end confirmed it was political.
Reply:you are right spain should've won
Reply:Do you know how many times this has come up tonight!! we are bored of it now!!
Reply:It is all political and I think it's by time, they called it a day
Reply:thats all it is , its time to get out
Reply:It would appear so, perhaps it's time to end this farce and withdraw from the whole European game show
Reply:Yep, it has been for years
Reply:maybe what you think is musical talent some might say that it is completly rubbish!
Reply:No matter what we do we will NEVER win it. We've tried everything (remember Jemini!!!!!)
Reply:Next year we should enter the very worst out of tune singer we can find!!!!!
Reply:its been political for years now. I didnt even watch it......did we get any points? Im guessing not.
