Who do you think will win the eurovision song contest this year? I think Cyprus will take it... but Spain, France, Romania, Belarus and Andorra are also good.

Does anyone watch the Eurovision song contest from start to finish?

I cant take more than 5 minutes before I fall off the sofa laughing

Does anyone watch the Eurovision song contest from start to finish?
Every year without fail. We draw up a points system for things like cheesiness, costume mishaps, swish dance moves, etc. Bonus points for a wink to the camera, strange instruments %26amp; camp moments, etc.

A great night in.

Reply:No - it's rubbish
Reply:It's rubbish, but incredibly watchable rubbish. The commentary by Terry Wogan alone is worth it. It is a forgone conclusion which countries will give top marks to each other too. The music is generally pathetic. I love it.

What is the meaining of eurovision song contest ?

It absolutelly sucks!...Every country has its own countries to be voted or not tobe voted...It has totally converted from a song contest into a manifestation of political area. It is high time this bullshit must be cancelled forever...

What is the meaining of eurovision song contest ?
It's a pan-European joke. Quality music has never ever existed in ESC!!!
Reply:The eurovision song contest is the kiss of death for any artist so only the crap ones are in it. It is purely political. Those countries that are into eurovision vote for their neighbours. Those that aren't into it don't bother. Who actually wins has little resemblence to whose the best. It's which country is most popular in the Eurovision circle. Even eurovision knows it. That's why they had two semi-finals where countries could not vote for their allies. Just laugh at the acts and don't take it seriously.
Reply:wat u sed is tru. but its just entertaining watching people from other countries tryna sing in english. lol. i watched 2008 and russia chose their biggest pop star and the single was produced by R %26amp; B star timbaland which is not fair. so no wojnder why russia won!
Reply:I know. Each country just votes for its neighbour over the border. Very predictable

Can anyone explain just what is the point of the Eurovision song contest?

Can anyone please explain just what is the point and origins of the Eurovision song contest? To me it seems it's a political vehicle for countries to enter the EU e.g. if Macedonia votes for Belgium they'll get fast tracked in

Can anyone explain just what is the point of the Eurovision song contest?
it fills a slot on telly for the BBC
Reply:In short to give points to your neighbors and launch crappy music...
Reply:It started well before the EU/EEC was even thought of!

What I'd like to know is why Israel is allowed to enter when they are not even part of Europe geopraphically or economically.
Reply:It's a showcase for the magnificent Wogmeister.
Reply:Nil point at all !
Reply:fun!!!
Reply:I never, watch it anymore. Its crap. UK, no points as usual.
Reply:Once upon a time, many years ago, a few European nations joined into a group called Eurovision, to show TV program's it didn't take off, but the song contest was born, compered by Katie Boyle, it was cringe worthy then, now its insufferable, haven't watched it much for about twenty years, but I believe it's still rubbish! as for the tactical voting Well----------- what do you expect from Europe?
Reply:My lovely horse, you're a pony no more.
Reply:Something to laugh at in the world of sadness
Reply:Haha, good question. In short, there is no point. Its all about countries voting for their friends and neighbours, not who actually plays music.

I remember the year when England invaded Iraq. We got no points that year, no-one liked us, whereas the Swiss always get some points cos they are so nice and never hassle anybody.
Reply:I am not going to waste my time bothering explaining a load of cobblers!whats the point!exactly!
Reply:You are so ignorant.

The whole council decides who gets in.

It's meant to have songs from different countries been broad casted life on television.

There are no hidden agenda's behind it at all.

Any idea when it started:way before you were born

Sky.
Reply:its to put all those eastern european countries, (we've never heard of )on the map, IF THERE IS ANYONE living there still, because they all live in the uk
Reply:nope i don't wanna!
Reply:The best way to watch Pukevision, other than not at all, is to use the subtiltes page on Ceefax (888) having downed a few units of alcohol, and speaking the words as if ham acting. Get a few mates round and take turns.
Reply:In the early days of European unity, it was seen as a way of bringing the people of the continent together (they dragged us on board too - in fact, we pay for the majority of the thing) and putting the dark past behind us. It worked for a while and the UK was always in the top five ... whether it was because the Europeans were grateful to us for the war, I don't know.

However, now it has descended into sectarian and political backbiting. Neighbours vote for each other trying to keep in each other's black books and because the current generation weren't involved in the war, they are no longer 'grateful' to us, and tend to revile us a little. It is now just a parody of what it was intended to be.
Reply:It shows how much we in the UK are despised. It also shows the bias between certain countries.

Is there any way to watch the Eurovision Song Contest in the USA?

Wondering if anyone knows any available satellite of cable channels that will carry the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest finals here in the US.

Is there any way to watch the Eurovision Song Contest in the USA?
Yes there is. Go on www.esctoday.www or www.eurovision.tv and you can watch it online live on 22 May. Or you can watch it on satellite on nearly every national TV of European countries: like ARD (Germany) on ASTRA, RTS (Serbia) on HOT BIRD, HRT (Croatia) on HOT BIRD, ORF (Austria) on ATRA and and and. By the way, American TV association have bought rights from European Broadcasting Union to organize similar competition in USA. Have fun!!!
Reply:Dont bother. Watch a re run of I Love Lucy instead. Its 100

Why don't they change the Eurovision Song Contest voting rules?

Everybody's fed up of political votes, even the english speaker was taking a piss out of it (as usual). This is putting the reputation of the show really down. There was only one eastern european song that was good, the one from Bulgaria, and by no means Portugal would vote 12 for Ukraine, which means that the millions of Ukranians that live there just mass voted for their own country. The portuguese would never vote so much for something so gay (we are very conservative people). The show is loosing it's meaning. They should have a panel of judges from each country to vote, not the entire population of the country because it will turn out as political votes. It's not fair for the UK to be classified within the last positions when their song was far better that most of the eastern block countries', ok, having trolley dollies is not a great way to get votes, but the song was not that bad this year, compared to last year.

Why don't they change the Eurovision Song Contest voting rules?
I am Greek, so you realize I am not politically predisposed towards any country (I will not speak of Turkey and Cyprus in order to avoid being considered as biased).

I agree with you that the Bulgarian song was very good. I voted for it.

However, totally impartially, based on my taste only, (and keep in mind I love England because i studied there), I thought the English song was silly. I am surprised it didn't finish last with 0 points! Although I liked the Irish song that finished last.

Although the neighbouring countries "allies" influence the result a lot, I must point out that usually this only helps to a limited extent, because in order to win, a song must be voted by all the countries or almost. So yes, perhaps some countries get a few more points than they deserve, but the winning song gets votes from everyone, so it is not the political alliances that make it win.

When -many years ago, you may have been too young to remember- the vote was made by a small jury in every country, the vote was even more political. And even worse, because it was really political, and not just based on mutual sympathies between people. And sometimes the vote did not even express the people's taste, but the taste of some wannabe "experts". Last year, I voted for the winning song. Many people did, and it got a high grade from Greece. We have nothing in favour or against Finland, we don't have immigrants from Finland to influence the result,we just liked the song. I am not saying we are right or wrong, but we did. I can guarantee that no committee in Greece would have voted for that song (because of their appearance and because of what everyone said the following day). So it wouldn't be fairly representing the opinion of greeks, would it?

Anyway, I agree that all the Former USSR and Yugoslav republics, as well as the Scandinavian countries, create some teams, but it's part of the game! It has always been. (Germany always voted for Greece nd Turkey because of the immigrants, etc). It's part of the "tradition" too. So I think the system should remain the same. Although I heard there will be some change with the number of countries that go through the semi-final. I really don't understand why England, France, Spain, and some other doesn't have to pass the semifinal, no matter how bad they went the previous year. I think it is the reason they send silly songs (however I always vote for France too!).
Reply:It'd be quicker and easier to put up a big multi-lingual sign at the start saying

"This is not meant to be taken seriously!"

What happened to singer Gianni Mascolo, who sang for Switzerland in the 1968 Eurovision Song Contest?

He sang a beautiful song called "Guardando il Sole" - and I think he was in San Remo in 1965, but that's all I know about him. Is he still alive? I would like to know about other songs he's sung. Many thanks.

I mean, do you think people are not judging by the quality of the music and lyrics, but by political prejudice?

If so, how could this problem be overcome?

What country won Eurovision song contest 1994, and with what song?

Paul Harrington is an Irish musician, who with Charlie McGettigan won the Eurovision Song Contest for the Republic of Ireland in 1994.

Their winning song was entitled "Rock'n Roll kids". Its music and lyrics had been written by Brendan Graham. This was the third time in a row that Ireland had won the Eurovision Song Contest; the first hat-trick in the competition's history. The duo were also the first band to be awarded over 200 points for an entry.

How many points will the UK get this year in eurovision song contest?

If it gets none or just two again, is it time to consider withdrawing from the EU. Serioulsy if the voting is political then doesn't this say something about our EU 'partners'?

How many points will the UK get this year in eurovision song contest?
A big fat "0"
Reply:I'm going to push the boat out this year and say that we might get into double figures. 11 points if we're lucky.

And I agree.

The voting is political, it is absolutley pointless in us even trying, but its taking part that counts and it is a laugh to watch.

Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest, How ?

Considering Israel is located in the Middle East, how did they end up in the Eurovision Song Contest held annually? As far as I know the competition is mainly taken part by Countries in Europe.

Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest, How ?
Israel is located at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea, bounded by Lebanon to the north, Syria to the northeast, Jordan to the east, and Egypt to the southwest.

So Israel is pretty much between asia, africa AND europe, though thats debatable, it isn't that off.

Someone here mentioned turkey - the main part of turkey is in europe, only the north is in asia.

EDIT: wikipedia also says that even though Israel is theoretically part of asia, because of it's much stronger boundings with europe, it usually takes part in european events. Keep in mind that Israel was "made" after WW2 and most of it's citiziens are europeans.

Is there any need for the UEFA Cup, Carling Cup or Eurovision Song Contest?

OK, I know the Eurovision isn't a football thing, but this is my list of three pointlessly underwhelming things that I wouldn't care if they disappeared tomorrow.

Anyone else agree/disagree?

Is there any need for the UEFA Cup, Carling Cup or Eurovision Song Contest?
Don't knock Eurovision. It's the only chance we have of getting any points next season!!
Reply:the uefa cup was left for the lower down teams to experience the thrills of European football. The likes of man u and Chelsea will always be in the champions league. Other teams that dont have the financial support like the above need the chance to get the extra money, as that what its all about "money"
Reply:although i've been saying that the UEFA cup is for those who want to kid themselves, i also think that there's no harm to play in this competition...

firstly, it will help teams assess their strengths and weaknesses against continental teams...

second, opportunity to scout players... probably the next footballing genuises are playing in this comp...

third, although not huge, there's some monetary rewards playing in these comps...
Reply:i think uefa cup is a good competition, there are a lot of good teams in Europe who do not make the champs league, why shouldn't they get the chance to play each other if anything it is more exciting than the champs league, all the same teams playing each other it is becoming very predictable, i mean how many times do we have to endure Liverpool v CFC and the final is a repeat of 2 years ago. it is becoming as predictable as our own premiership.
Reply:eurovision can **** off for all i care and terry wogan for that matter as well. the uefa cup gives smaller teams the chance to compete in a european competition, i can only assume that you support a big club who qualifies for the champions league on a yearly basis. did you not watch the final last night? it was a fantastic match, the best i've seen a while. the carling cup may not mean much to you but to league 1+2 clubs the money they can make by playing the big boys can make a huge difference to their bank balance. and the winners get a place in europe!
Reply:I agree, boring boring.. but there are some people that love it unfortunately..... I really dont get the Eurovision song contest at ALL!! but it exists to make sponser companies richer.
Reply:Yeah don't knock the Eurovision Song Contest - that's the title Fergie really wants to win
Reply:Definitely, NOT for the Eurovision contest. It's terrible, it's a crime against humanity, XDD

Do you think we should retire from the Eurovision Song Contest, since it seems to be a plain circus ?

What do you think ?

According to me, we should follow Italia's example, who wisely decided to leave this so-called contest.

Italians know about Arts and Music, so why did they leave? I suppose they understood the sad truth about this "Music" contest...

Bence Eurovision'u terk etsek çok iyi olur...

Do you think we should retire from the Eurovision Song Contest, since it seems to be a plain circus ?
yes...I think eurovision song contest has turned into a political song contest. It is far off from its planned intentions -a million years ago when the earth crust was still hot ...

Its been years since I have not watched it and I think its just waist of money...they should use the money for something more usefull...
Reply:As far as I know Italians left the contest because it conflicted with their San Remo one. (Italians are artistic but this contest is about money) I agree it is a circus but the thing is you, me, and the rest of us whose countries are participating should not take it so seriously. For some it is fame for others money and for viewers fun. So, let's have fun!
Reply:It's high camp fun, we can still put in the odd joke competitor, but don't hype it as if we stand a chance. Spain didn't vote for us after Falklands, half of Europe didn't vote for us after Iraq. It's a political popularity contest, plain and simple.
Reply:Think positive. There are 2 entries from turkey this year. :-D I'm sure you'll be enjoy Dustin the Turkey just as much as Mor ve Otesi.

Reply:Yes, we must leave as soon as possible...

How on Earth did those talentless twerps Scooch get to represent the UK in the Eurovision song contest?

Year after year it's the same old story, pick a group of talentless, self absorbed twerps. Give them a really awful load of rubbish to perform and expect them to win.

OK, we shouldn't take this contest to seriously, and the voting is a joke but do we have to make our nation a laughing stock too?

How on Earth did those talentless twerps Scooch get to represent the UK in the Eurovision song contest?
At least it want Jordan
Reply:Because the programme hostess ignored Terry Wogan's announcement, and made a bad choice of her own.

But, don't take it too seriously, it is not going to affect global warming or the real world.

In any case, why should there be a need for voting and winners? After all, it is a failry reasonable 3 hours of musical entertainment, and does not need to pretend to be anything more.
Reply:i absolutely agree, of all the good groups and singers we have in the u.k, they have to pick the most cheesiest group there could possibly think of, and they absolutely succeeded in making us the laughing stock
Reply:well to be fair it wouldn't really matter if we managed to pick an absolutely fantastic talented act because everyone hates us politically anyway.

Don't take it seriously, it's supposed to be a fun kitsch fest. Ukraine should have won!
Reply:We never win at anything - football, tennis (Henman is a joke) and even the Eurovision. We have no competitive streak in us - we are happy to be the hapless losers. It's so embarrassing.
Reply:Just another implosion in the pan.

Another one-flop-wonder.

Kinda reminds me of the that 'band' that 'sung' that song about fast food joints or somthing like that.
Reply:I don't know why but I liked UK's song. What was good in Lordis's song last year? -only those ugly masquerade costumes. UK's performance was aimed at merry young people and I liked it.
Reply:Because we don't take Eurovision seriously, unlike other European countries. Ours was truly shocking, we didn't even go for the obvious rock theme that everyone else was doing.
Reply:It was rather like an alternative comedy show...

Why does the Vatican never enter the Eurovision Song Contest?

Just curious...this has been bugging me for ages now!

Why does the Vatican never enter the Eurovision Song Contest?
because the broadcaster from vatican only broadcasts religious programs
Reply:They did have an unofficial entry from a couple of priests in Ireland about 10 years ago. You be the judge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8linZiGYS...
Reply:Because we have to protect the kids of Europe from too much love.
Reply:Have a heart man! There already are enough out of tune and out of touch with reality participants there; we don't need catholic priests to feel weird...
Reply:Because the Vatican is a tiny state in a state (Italy) and the people living there are mostly priests and nuns, so could you imagine them participating in the Eurovision Song Contest. Perhaps the Pope himself would do it, sorry bad joke!!!

What is the txt number for the 2007 eurovision song contest?

Do you have any views on Ireland's entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, not making it to the final?

Dustin the Turkey was eliminated at last nights semi-final.

Do you have any views on Ireland's entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, not making it to the final?
It was only taking the mick anyway and if he did get through he would not have gotten newhere, cause all the other countries just vote for each other.
Reply:Not surprising they never made it through. It was utter rubbish! I've read the lyrics, Ireland did themselves no favours, really - the first line is 'Oh I come from a nation what knows how to write a song' - doesn't seem like it going by this!

Fair enough, it may have been a 'comedy' entry, but it wasn't good.
Reply:Ireland has a great tradition in music and I don't think that the "turkey" is a representation of this beautiful country that I have visited and loved, so I am very happy it didn't go to the finals.
Reply:I didn't watch it but I read about it on the BBC this morning.

I think all Eurovision it meant to be tongue-in-cheek but I think Ireland went a bit too far!

They forget that some of the countries actually take it extremely seriously!
Reply:I think the Irish people will be glad, after Dana and Johnny Logan they don't need dustin, i only saw him on the news and that was enough.
Reply:Ah I think it sucks. He was just there taking the piss in the first place. Take it the rest of europe didnt find it particuarly funny.
Reply:Well, its all a bit past it now anyway, no one really takes it seriously do they? About time they scrapped it.
Reply:well it was a finger up at the eurovision ...what did they expect...Any way **** RTE and **** dustin ....pity they didn't set him alight
Reply:Good.

Is the eurovision song contest becoming a joke?

I mean come on... UK Spain France Sweden and Germany all coming around last and the likes of serbia coming first?? Who thinks the votes reflect political issues and western europe is disliked?

Is the eurovision song contest becoming a joke?
Like everything else, it depends. When you lose, it's a joke, when you win, it's THE most important thing in shows%26amp;entertainment... The UK surely made a fuss about it when they were winnig it... But change is the name of the game, right?
Reply:Serbias song totally SUCKED!!! I hate that song! I think that Sweden Finland, Belarus and... I can't remember which country, but the girl that had a bus stop sign in the background were the best.

I read somewhere that Scissor Sisters had said that they had heard that people are sending the worst song they can find because they don't want to be next years host!
Reply:Slavic countries always vote for each other. For them, it is awfully important to win and thus to raise their self-esteem.
Reply:why, just because the west was left out??
Reply:this year the singers were unexpectedly...the songs were path ethic......I don't know......I think that our Europe isn't the way it used to be........Antonella from Croatia......

How will Britain's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest do on Saturday?

Also, how did the song automatically qualify along with four others? Have I missed something? I only found out by accident on Tuesday there were to be semi finals for the contest.

How will Britain's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest do on Saturday?
Our entry will not fare well because it's too normal. It's not gimmicky enough. Besides, like others have said, it doesn't matter how much Europe like the song, they will vote for their neighbours. The Balkans will vote for the Balkans, the Scandinavians for the Scandinavians and so on.

Wogan likes to think there's an imaginary wall running from the Arctic to the Adriatic, and nobody west of the frontier has won Eurovision for eight years.

We never take Eurovision as seriously as the Eastern European countries do (in fact, we don't take it seriously at all!).

Eurovision's just not about the music anymore. Austria even described it as "a political parade ground".

There's quite an interesting article about it in this week's Radio Times, where Wogan gives his view on the whole issue.
Reply:Same here. Unless they get someone equally as witty to do it. I can imagine Paul Merton or possibly Ian Hislop doing it. Report Abuse

Reply:Our song automatically qualifies along with a few other nations because we pay for it all. Lately it's not been much fun, because the since the Eastern European nations joined in, they only vote for each other so it's just become political. Also the votes now are quickly delivered so there's no tension. It's still a laugh tho, we take it all with a pinch of salt, but some of the other nations are so serious about it.
Reply:I don't particularly like it, but even if Europe loved it, they would never vote for us, because we are the UK. Eastern Europe all vote for each other and so do countries like Greece and Cyprus, and Portugal and Spain. Yet it seems Ireland and the UK would do the same, but we don't - we play fair, and vote for the best song in the contest. I'll be surprised if we ever win again tbh.
Reply:The UK automatically qualifies because it the largest contributor to the European broadcasting commission, as some one has already said we pay for others to cheat, sums up Europe as whole really doesn't it. Andy Abraham's Will fail miserabley but he can take comfort in the fact his head looks like a giant malteaser, so its not all bad.
Reply:It could be the best song in the world but no-one will vote for it because it's the UK entry

~x~
Reply:The songs not as bad as some we've had, but all the same you'll notice all the countires next door to each other, (especially greece etc) always vote for each other, so we got no chance! Lol
Reply:I think our entry is terrible! Anyway, the voting always seems to be rigged so we won't win .
Reply:It will come about 30th - if we're lucky !

Are you a masochist?

How come Israel is in the Eurovision song contest?

my geography is a bit rusty, but I don't think Israel is in Europe is it? If it was it would be in the EU wouldn't it? And have Euros?

How come Israel is in the Eurovision song contest?
Being in Europe has nothing to do with the EU or Euros.

The Eurovision Song Contest is organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) which now consists of most of the countries on the European continent (before the end of the Cold War it only operated in western Europe - the communist countries had a similar organisation called Intervision), plus most of the countries around the Mediterranean sea, including Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, and most of the countries in North Africa. Any EBU member country can broadcast and enter into the Eurovision Song Contest provided they agree to show all the songs and voting - Lebanon once entered, but couldn't participate because they wouldn't show Israel's song.

You could have asked the same question about how come Israel and Israeli teams play in the UEFA football competitions, to which the answer is that they used to play in the Asian confederation but moved because the Arab countries wouldn't play them; for a time they ended up playing against CONCACAF (North and Central American) sides before they eventually became part of Europe for football purposes.
Reply:Come to think of it, I think you may be right there. I know that Israel has been in the Eurovision song contest for many years but whether it is actually in Europe I don't know. Some say Turkey is just in Europe but Israel is beyond Turkey.
Reply:Don't get me started on this one ...............
Reply:Arab(ic)(ian) Idol wasn't accepting any more contestants
Reply:Europeans love to sing, thus Israel is included as they are mostly european. Cheers!
Reply:Its because the Arabs wont let the Jews play in any of their reindeer games.

Good Luck!!!
Reply:Israel is not the only non-European country to participate.
Reply:Although not geographically part of Europe, around half of Israelies lived in Europe before emigrating to Israel around the beginning of last century, therefore they are very much connected to Europe...afterall many lived there for many centuries!
Reply:Not all European Nations use the Euro.

Isreal is part of the European continent.

Russia is not in the EU

Where do you think the Middle East is the middle east of.

The Eurovision song contest is crAP let Isreal have it anyway.
Reply:Alot of non European countries are in eurovision. North Africa and some asian countries are in it too
Reply:or get to play in european league football games for that matter?
Reply:It's the same with the european football championships.

International zionist conspiracy??

No just the fact that middle east countries do not have their own football tournament or song contest.

And if they did it is unlikely their neighbours would want to take part with them
Reply:LOL

don't tell me they got into it?

Well, they are European. Just the geography has changed. Ersatz israeli people have a lot of relatives who are involved with it, and they want to play as well.

make them move back to Europe I say.

What did you think to the UK Eurovision song contest selection?

Andy has a great voice but is totally unsuitable for the Eurovision. His song was just too plain. Eurovision is all about novelty and kitch, dramatic songs. I think the Romanian girl should have won.

What did you think to the UK Eurovision song contest selection?
Andy's boring, the romanian girl was more eurovision,i also liked michelle gayles song, very catchy for eurovision.
Reply:well i think the irish turkey puppet will do better.

shame.
Reply:The UK's contestants get worse on every contest!

Christ, It's an embarassment to the country.

Anyone remember Jemini!?
Reply:unless simon cowell will sing
Reply:its a fix
Reply:no i dont think andy is right for the eurovision contest.
Reply:It won't beat Dustin the Turkey!

Go on you good thing!!!
Reply:I agree with you. Do anyone think Ireland is desperate to not win as they don't want to pay for hosting the next one? What will be fascinating is how the eastern European countries will now vote.
Reply:bleh
Reply:I'm sure something went wrong last night - don't you think everyone expected Michelle Gayle to win!

She certainly did - did you see how she stormed off at the end!!
Reply:Did Andy win!!?

=(

I wanted the 'woo' song to win!!

x
Reply:yeah i think the uk need to drop the whole charade and just admit that no1 cares anymore.

have u heard Irelands -FUNNY
Reply:Well I think it's about time we got someone half famous to do our song.

You see in other countries artists who are famous and popular doing putting themselves forward for the country.

How about we get someone like Sir Paul Mccartney/Robbie Williams/Sir Tom Jones to sing for us and THEN we may have a chance. The problem is all the well known singers are too scared? to enter the show in case they get nil point ;)
Reply:It is a good song but Michelle's song was more suited to Eurovision. It had everything Eurovision song needs. I have been watching it for years and like it or not, Eurovison has changed. If we want to do better, we should try and play the game. it is very true-a pop star would win many votes and then nobody would (hopefully) complain about political voting form Eastern European countires. The other thing is, many of the UK entries in Making Your Mind Up in previous years are stuck in the eighties and nineties (like the girl's band who won first head to head-sorry I can't remember their name) Folksy songs do much better these days. Overall, I think that British publichas voted so much better than in previous years.
Reply:Who cares? The UK will never win again..

It isnt based on talent. The UK is the second biggest musical nation in the world. It's based on alliances and popularity. And we have neither in Europe.

Should the "singers" on the eurovision song contest be made to sing in English?

Or is this taking something away from their national identities?

Should the "singers" on the eurovision song contest be made to sing in English?
After ABBA won with Waterloo in 1974, the rules were changed so that each country had to sing in their native tongue.

This rule lasted some time until it was relaxed. (Do not know the year)

So your suggestion is a bit on par with what actually happened after ABBA, at the other extreme scale.
Reply:if they sang in english the songs would be rubbish songs sung in english

as opposed to rubbish songs sung in a range of languages

in the olden days they sang in english if they hoped to sell the tripe after the competition but these days no one would waste their money

the question should be .....why is there a eurovision song contest?

it is now just political voting for 'friendly' nations ....with rubbish songs
Reply:No, it's a Eurovision song contest, they are allowed to sing in any language they want. By the way, the most spoken language in Europe is actually German - you wouldn't want them to sing it German, would you?

Terry Wogan is a nasty obnoxious mean old man - I'd happily torture him into death if I could. On Making Up Your Mind he said "there's no 43 countries in Europe". There's actually around 50 of them, for his information and Turkey and Israel (Asia) usually take part too.

It's wasting time, but I still repeat - Eurovision is NOT political. It's only in UK people think that way. I'm from Slovakia, a country which NEVER enters Eurovision, so I think I am unbiased enough to be trusted on this. I think the fact that each country gives points to 10 other countries- and not just 1 - prevents it being political. And if Ukraine gives points to Russia, it's not because of politics (I wouldn't say they love each other!), but because Russian music is close to people of Ukraine. I'd love to watch Eurovision, but I can't because of that stupid Wogan and his comments. I was really shocked when I watched it first time in UK, I've never seen so much hatred on TV from a presenter. I watched Eurovision on Austrian TV in 2002 and it wasn't anything like that, even though Austria ended up somewhere down at the bottom, the presenter never uttered a word of abuse. (And yes, I could understand German at that time well enough to know that.)

UK is a great country - I really want UK to win - but tell me, is it such a crime when somebody like Serbia wins? The guys there don't have so much, so come on!
Reply:Why should anyone expect them to sing in english? It's not an english contest, it's a European one and there are many languages in Europe.

I could just about understand it if you expected everyone to sing in the host country's language, but to expect everyone to sing in english is ridiculous.

This type of comment is why the rest of Europe thinks the English are arrogant.
Reply:I don't think so, becuse the whole point of this ridiculous contest is to introduce unity between nations.

So everyone singing in English would make the contest dull for other nations.

Then theres other issues of learning English, changing songs to match the new english words...the list goes on... maybe they should add enlgish subtitles.
Reply:The could speak in Hanik for all I care I will keep boycotting it, I hate it since my 18 bday party was ruined because my friends wanted to watch it on the tv in the pub. By the second song I felt like walking out on my own Bday party in fact.
Reply:That's why the Eurovision songs try to go for gay, catchy tunes because it appeals to people who can't understand the language. Well, they try to appeal to people anyway.
Reply:English just makes it easier to understand. It is also broadcast in french however. But you must rememebr that 70% of the funding comes from the UK, so really our language should be used...
Reply:Oh! LB, prey tell me why would you think such a thing, most of the crappy 'songs' sound better in another language.

And of course not forgetting the Irish turkey this year!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:Seeing as it's the Eurovision Song Contest, I think the competitors should sing in their own language.
Reply:theres more contries that dont speak english, what if they demand every....

what am i doing, who watches eurovision song contest anyway. it's cr@p. lol
Reply:How did Israel manage to sneak into the Eurovision Song Contest?
Reply:Eurovision is wonderful after binge drinking.... it makes you puke.
Reply:No. They should all sing in Norwegian as it's much more European than English.
Reply:It's kinda weird when they all sing in their own languages.. we can't understand..but what if they can't speak english? Hmm..
Reply:no, its called eurovision
Reply:I don't care really but they should definately be made to sing.
Reply:I would prefer they not sing at all, but if they must then it should not be on prime time TV.
Reply:I could care less what language they sing in...this programme is so boring, and half of them cannot sing at all.
Reply:Got to agree with you lol
Reply:I can't stop crying. My heart goes out to the family.
Reply:only if they get paid in dollars.
Reply:No..Why would they...They represent their country, language etc..

Why is Israel allowed to enter the Eurovision song contest?

It doesn't make sense. If Israel's in Europe, then Britain's in the Middle East!

Why is Israel allowed to enter the Eurovision song contest?
It's a historical thing going back to the early days of The European Broadcasting Union. Israel were members and they've stayed in the competition since then. Come to think of it Russia isn't in Europe either!
Reply:They had a few minutes left over and they did not know what to do.

Being in Europe has NEVER been a necessary criteria to enter the competition.

It was named Eurovision because the first countries to participate in it were all in Europe.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurovision_...
Reply:libanon is clearly not european too, though they can also join in the song contest. Israel has some bounds with europe, i guess that's why.

I don't think it's because they would threaten us with bombs etc.
Reply:Turkey and Lebanon are not in Europe so why single out Israel?

It doesn't really matter anyway as the competition is a total farce anyway.
Reply:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel_in_t...

I hope this helps.
Reply:Well it's like England -UK

Russia-USSR!-much of this is outside Europe

Don't know why Israel or Turkey are in as they are not part of Europe
Reply:Your right that Isreal isn't in europe but they are a member of the European Broadcasters Association which is why they are allowed to enter.
Reply:Who cares? The last song was good and it certainly bet a lot of the other songs that made the finals
Reply:This stupid, political farce should have been scrapped years ago. Either bring back Katie Boyle and proper judging for those that enjoy it or lets get the hell out of it ourselves.
Reply:what about all the others who are not in Europe.
Reply:fine, you're in the Middle East then from now on.
Reply:lol, its all toadying politics. Only gaymen love the comp..
Reply:I COMPLETELY AGREE

WHY NOT LET AUSTRALIA IN AS YOU OBVIOUSLY DON'T HAVE TO BE IN EUROPE AT ALL.

EVEN IF IT IS CALLED EUROVISION
Reply:because they would only complain and make bomb threats or something...i dont mean that in a racist way by the way! but they probably would

Why does Israel participate in the Eurovision song contest?

Israel is not a country in the continent of Europe.

Why does Israel participate in the Eurovision song contest?
The requirement for participation is that a television station in the country must have joined the EBU. So, it's down to them whether a country joins, rather than strict geography.

How come Norway cant win the eurovision song contest?

When its obvious tonight that they can hold a tune.

How come Norway cant win the eurovision song contest?
Funny how You'll Never Walk Alone is sung so loud before the match then the stadium goes quiet the rest of the match,
Reply:This is the football (soccer) part of answer yahoo.

Just telling you.

Any idea what time they start to do the scores for the Eurovision Song Contest?

Watching the singing bores me to tears, I only like to watch the scores. Any rough ideas what time they do it? I'm not interested if you don't watch it or if it is a load of rubbish, so none of the usual boring answers please.

Any idea what time they start to do the scores for the Eurovision Song Contest?
I would guess that the voting takes the last hour of the show, so because the show is on from 8pm-11:15pm I guess the voting will start around 10:15pm. But it wouldn't hurt to start watching before this just encase I am wrong.
Reply:Strange question for the "trying to concieve" board??? are you wanting to know so you can ttc whilst the singing is on and stop when the results are being given???? Hmmm
Reply:Strange question to out in this category? If watching the eurovision helps with ttc it's worth a try!
Reply:proberly about an hour before the end about 10
Reply:It's usually around 10 o'clock or a bit after. They try to get the contest proper over within 2hrs. Sad ain't I? But I did predict Lordi last year.

Should Ireland just give up on the Eurovision song contest whole and entire?

Because it is not a song contest anymore really is it?!

Should Ireland just give up on the Eurovision song contest whole and entire?
The whole thing should be scraped.

Dustin sucked...but the whole thing just sucks anyway.....the song was only as much of a joke as the whole competition

Has anyone even HEARD of most of these supposedly "European" countries?

seriously? since when is ISRAEL part of Europe?

And countries like Ireland dont have a chance because their music is way different to what we listen to in the "proper" Europe....

wow...some of those countries.....;(

i dont know which one it was, but there was one country (that got through!) with a couple who looked like they escaped from a mental institution lol

i think the whole thing should be stop this phone or text in vote has killed the contest they should go back to the old system or scrape it i would love to see them go back to the old system then you wont get your block voting or not to the scale that is

Is there anybody out there who actually enjoyed the Eurovision Song contest?

I did, i thought the location was amazing, and who cares any way it is just a bit of fun! It was a classic eurovision song contest and if you don't like it then don't watch it.

Is there anybody out there who actually enjoyed the Eurovision Song contest?
Yes, it was just the best this year, i had a bet on that russia would win, 11/4 odds , i think my winnings will be 150 euro, alsow spain had a very wacky act this year, you can watch any of the entries on u tube.
Reply:Yes, it was fun and entertaining but I just don't see the point in the UK continuing to enter .... Terry Wogan stated at the start that he couldn't see where the UK votes would come from and they didn't come exactly as predicted. Perhaps we should change it ti an International Song Contest and get the likes of America, Australia, New Zealand, and the far eastern countries come on board ...... that you upset the political voting inherent at the moment. It would still probably be political but perhaps the UK would stand a fighting chance.
Reply:I enjoyed it until the results all came in. As usual it is all bullocks and gives further reason for us to leave Europe as they clearly don't like us and their sense of fair play i.e actually choosing the BEST song, not their best friend/neighbour is all seriously lacking. Tossers
Reply:I really enjoy watching it because I can hear some really nice songs in it. Of course almost every time the ones I like , are not even in top 5 and sometimes are last (like UK this year or France). But I don't care. I like what I like and no one can tell me which song is the best.
Reply:My partner says that he loves it because it's so bad, he especially loved the pirate one with all the ho ho hoing.
Reply:Never watched it, it was me mate's sister's 18th instead so we all got stupidly pissed. :-)
Reply:NO! I wanted to watch casualty and they took that off the screens!
Reply:A few people do
Reply:No. It's not about the music anymore.
Reply:are you Russian by any chance?
Reply:I liked the one with pirates in.
Reply:why doesnt it air in america?

Why does England has a separate football team, but goes in the Eurovision song contest as the UK!?

It is clear to everyone that in this way they can not represent the Scotish, the Welsh or the Northern Ireland.

By going as separate entities, they can also avoid the Eurovision problems of Block voting.

If San Marino is going there separately so can The Isle of White, Guernsey or what have you.

I think its time to start wining in the Eurovision!

Why does England has a separate football team, but goes in the Eurovision song contest as the UK!?
Agreed TOTALLY!
Reply:Enter the England football team for the Eurovision song contest.

They stand more chance of winning that.

I have a friend who is a fantastic composer and would like to enter a song for next year's Eurovision Song Contest. How would he go about this?

Get a lobotomy and a taste bypass. Become East European. Be a tranny.

We could enter the most amazing song Europe has ever heard ( Even more amazing than Robbie Williams - Angels ) and we'd still come last.

We have to face the facts, Europe doesn't like us. To them we're just a smaller version of America !

How many times has the UK won the eurovision song contest???
We've done in 1967, 1969, 1976, 1981 and 1997. Since the eastern bloc seem to have it all boxed off for themselves, I don't think the above will ever change.
