Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest, How ?

Considering Israel is located in the Middle East, how did they end up in the Eurovision Song Contest held annually? As far as I know the competition is mainly taken part by Countries in Europe.

Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest, How ?
Israel is located at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea, bounded by Lebanon to the north, Syria to the northeast, Jordan to the east, and Egypt to the southwest.

So Israel is pretty much between asia, africa AND europe, though thats debatable, it isn't that off.

Someone here mentioned turkey - the main part of turkey is in europe, only the north is in asia.

EDIT: wikipedia also says that even though Israel is theoretically part of asia, because of it's much stronger boundings with europe, it usually takes part in european events. Keep in mind that Israel was "made" after WW2 and most of it's citiziens are europeans.

Reply:Because they are the chosen ones by God. And Egypt would be the next to be in the Eurovision contest.
Reply:Israel's location is debatable so it might be because of that really.
Reply:Because they don't like to associate with the Arab countries

I think Turkey have conned their way in as well.
Reply:Israel is in Asia, so no, I don't know why or how they are in the Eurovision.
